The CIty Of Chicago Declares 'Chaka Khan Day'

(Los Angeles, CA - July 29, 2013) -- The City of Chicago honored ten-time GRAMMY® Award winner Chaka Khan with a Street Naming of "Chaka Khan Way" on Saturday, July 27, and declared Sunday, July 28, 2013, "Chaka Khan Day" in Chicago, her hometown. The weekend-long celebration also included a free outdoor concert in Millennium Park.

The music icon, who was honored for her stellar 40-year career in music and entertainment, participated in the ceremonial unveiling of Chaka Khan Way on S. Blackstone Avenue, between 50th and 51st Streets, with her family, including her mother Sandra Coleman, her sister, Tammy McCrary, and a host of other relatives in the Chicago area. Several city officials, business executives and community leaders were among the participants, including Fourth Ward Alderman William Burns, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Father Pfleger of St. Sabina Catholic School, State Senator Kwame Raoul, State Representatives Christian Mitchell and Barbara Flynn Currie, and Carl McKenzie, a cultural event producer and the president of Artworks Chicago. McKenzie organized the weekend-long celebration, which was co-sponsored by MINI USA. Chaka Khan Way is located on the west side of Kenwood Academy, where Chaka attended high school during its early days of operation. The students of Kenwood Academy also had the opportunity to participate in the event.

"This is the biggest honor I have ever received in my life," says Chaka. "The people of Chicago have always loved me and have supported me throughout my career--through thick and thin. To have a street named after you in the third largest city in the country is a big deal. To think that people will say 'make a right or left turn on Chaka Khan Way' is mind blowing. Long after I'm gone, and my children and grandchildren are gone, the street named Chaka Khan Way will still be here to carry on my legacy in the city where it all started for me. I never would have imagined that I would have been granted this honor. I thank all the city officials responsible for making this happening--and I especially thank Carl McKenzie, who vigorously campaigned and almost single-handedly made this event a reality. My family and I thank God for this blessing."

Nearly, 20,000 people attended the free outdoor concert at Chicago's Millennium Park, where Chaka performed all her classic hits, including "I Feel For You," "I'm a Woman," "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me," "You've Got The Love," "Everlasting Love," "Packed My Bags," "Papillon," "Tell Me Something Good," a medley of "Stay," "Sweet Thing," and "My Funny Valentine," "Through The Fire," "Do You Love What You Feel," "I'm Every Woman," and an encore of "Ain't Nobody."

The weekend-long activities also included a visit to Operation Push with Reverend Jesse Jackson and a private reception at the DuSable Museum. A devoted activist and philanthropist, Chaka met with Reverend Jackson to discuss the issues facing and affecting the black community of Chicago. Operation Push and Reverend Jackson also hosted Chaka Khan Foundation's latest campaign initiative with the Chicago chapter of Dress for Success.

Chaka was born in Chicago and grew up on Carpenter Street in Hyde Park, where her parents provided her with a very rich musical foundation by introducing her to a wide range of music, starting with jazz and opera. Before joining Rufus, Chaka sang with local groups such as The Babysitters, Lock and Chain and Lyfe.

Chaka is currently working on a series of new albums, titled The iKhan Project. Chaka Khan Enterprises recently relaunched her website www.chakakhan.com

World's Collide In Bruce Norris' "A Parallelogram'

Bruce Norris’ latest work, A Parallelogram, is a hilarious existential ride.

It’s currently enjoying its West Coast premiere at the Mark Taper Forum through Aug. 18.

First lets deal with the elephant in the room. The title of this project doesn’t exactly make one jump at the thought of seeing it. Websters describes a parallelogram as a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and equal – namely a rectangle, square or rhombus.   Ok, I’ll admit including the definition just now only makes matters worse.

Trying to explain A Parallelogram is probably as confusing as the mathematic equation itself.

Marin Ireland plays a woman (Bee) who is having a mysterious encounter with what may be her older self (Bee 2, Bee 3and Bee 4) played hilariously by MaryLouise Burke

Doling out information here and there, the older chain-smoking, self warns Bee about upcoming and pending events and even gives her relationship advice.

One day, out of the blue, Bee solicits a response from her live in boyfriend, Jay, (Tom Irwin) by asking the following question. “If you knew in advance exactly… how everything was going to turn out,” she says, “and if you knew you couldn’t do anything to change it, would you still want to go on with your life?”

The question leaves Jay perplexed. And eventually, after some strange things start occurring around their apartment, Jay begins to suspect his girlfriend is losing it.

First, he keeps smelling cigarettes in the apartment, although Bee denies she smokes. It’s actually Bee 2 smoking. How Jay can smell it since she’s in another dimension – is too difficult to figure out even with Bee 2’s explanation.

Enter JJ (Carlo Alban), the Hispanic gardener, who somehow gets thrown into the mix.  All but JJ have cynicism dripping from their veins.

This is a rag tag group that has to find their way through the muck and mire of what’s real, but more importantly, what matters.  It’s about being thankful for what one has. The grass is not always greener.

Bruce Norris (who won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony for Clybourne Park, his answer to A Raisin In The Sun) is a vivid and witty writer. His prose in A Parallelogram is snappy and smart.  He asks questions of his audience – many of which don’t have an answer. One of the questions he asks is if fate exists — if your life was predetermined and could not be changed — would you want to live it? The ploy is used to get a conversation going – it works.    The real question is whether Bee 2, Bee 3 and Bee 4 and her magical remote control that allows time to be rewound, actually exist.
This speculative comedy, which begs to question whether we can actually effect change in our own lives, is performed by a stellar cast.  Marin Ireland is believable and splendid as a woman in the throws of introspection. Tom Irwin’s performance is masterful. MaryLouise Burke is hilarious with her deadpan responses and delivery.  Carlo Alban delivers a subtle, yet poignant performance.

Anna D. Shapiro who directed the world premiere of A Parallelogram at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre  Company in 2010, delivers a fluid staging – making good use of the stage.

The true star of this show is Todd Rosenthal’s set. It’s brilliant! It effortlessly goes from swanky apartment, to hospital, back to apartment in seconds.

Kudos to everyone involved in this production.

A Parallelogram, written by Bruce Norris and directed by Anna D. Shapiro, stars Carlo Alban, MaryLouise Burke, Marin Ireland and Tom Irwin.

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work) L (likeable), O (OK) and E (excellent/exquisite), A Parallelogram gets an E (excellent).

A Parallelogram, Mark Taper Forum, 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles; Tues.-Fri. 8 p.m., Sat. 2:30 and 8 p.m., Sun. 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., through Aug. 18; $20-$70; 213 628 2772, CenterTheatreGroup.org

Ernest Harden Stars In 'Beethoven and Misfortune Cookies' At The MET Theatre In Hollywood

“Beethoven and Misfortune Cookies,” set to open Aug. 10 at the MET Theatre in Hollywood, is the true story of Kabin Thomas, a musician and, for eleven years, a Professor of Music at the University of Arkansas. The show begins with Thomas teaching a lesson about the struggles of Beethoven, the composer of mixed European and Moorish ancestry who coped with hearing loss in his later years and creating his Ninth Symphony while deaf.

Thomas later runs into trouble with the university authorities subsequent to his teaching a lesson about Abel Meeropol and his song made famous by Billie Holiday, “Strange Fruit,” about the lynching of Blacks in the Deep South. Thomas accompanies the lesson with a famous photograph of lynching victims.

Relieved of his teaching position, Thomas subsequently comes to Hollywood and is cast on a reality TV show. Becoming aware of his father’s early demise related to mental illness, Thomas must overcome his own personal inner demons if he is to survive and attain any lasting measure of happiness.

A graduate of USC, her previous playwriting credits include “A Brush With Fate,” “For Pete’s Sake,” “The Green Grocer,””Jack of Hearts,” and “Sex, Love and the Premature Evacuation.” She has also extensively written for television, notably music documentaries and a travel series.

T.J. Castronovo directs. He has directed many shows in L.A. (including “Brooklyn, U.S.A.,” “The Leopard,” “Campaign,” “Women in Shorts”) and off-Broadway. He is co-producer of the touring comedy “Viagra Falls.” Also an actor, he was a regular on the TV series “Taxi” as Tommy the bartender, subsequently appearing in many feature films and episodics. He produced the TV series “Tales From the Darkside,” for which he also directed selected episodes.

Ernest Harden, Jr. portrays Professor Thomas. Harden was seen at the MET in “Savage World,” but is possibly best known for his extensive work in TV and film, including recurring characters on “The Jeffersons” and “Santa Barbara” and starring roles opposite Bette Davis in “White Mama” and opposite Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes in “White Men Can’t Jump.”

This tour transports you back to the 1920's and takes you to secret bars and hidden speakeasies throughout the city, some of which feature burlesque and jazz shows during the week. Along the way, sip champagne, enjoy the limo ride, and learn about the era as you visit each stop.

CENTER THEATRE GROUP RECEIVES $1 MILLION GRANT
FROM THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION

Collaboratively Created Work Is Focus Of Grant

Center Theatre Group (CTG) has been awarded a four-year, $1 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  The grant will make possible a program focusing on collaboratively created contemporary work from ensembles, devisers and writers, supporting the creative arc from commissioning through development and production; the program will build on the work generated by a multi-year 2009 Mellon Foundation grant supporting the development of non-text based work.
A recent and growing presence on the traditional regional theatre scene, collective contemporary theatre combines performance, technology, imagery, music, heightened text and often, but not exclusively, a non-linear narrative.
“This program and so many that the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funds are all part of a puzzle that recognizes the vibrancy and urgency of collaborative work created nationally,” said CTG Artistic Director Michael Ritchie. “CTG recognizes our responsibility to open our doors to innovators who can expand our programming with this new energy and aesthetic, and to deepen the support we’ve been able to give to such artists in recent years.”
Director of New Play Production Diane Rodriguez noted, “In the last few years, we have seen the ensemble movement grow and flourish in this country.  This program is part of that movement and we look forward to continuing to find innovative models and opportunities to support those theatre makers who create collectively.”
The 2009 Mellon grant has supported such projects as Rude Mechs’ “I’ve Never Been So Happy” (CTG/Kirk Douglas Theatre, 2011), Daniel Alexander Jones’ “Radiate” (DouglasPlus, 2012), “Neva” by Guillermo CalderĂłn (a collaborative tour presented first at Upstairs@KDT in June 2013 and then at South Coast Repertory and La Jolla Playhouse). Active projects currently in development are “Hope” by Evelina Fernandez and the Latino Theatre Company, “Western Society” by the international theatre company Gob Squad, “Party People” by Universes, “Straight White Men” by Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company, and “Lester Bangs” by collaborators Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is a private philanthropic institution that makes grants on a selective basis in five core program areas: higher education and scholarship, scholarly communications and information technology, museums and art conservation, conservation and the environment, and performing arts. The Foundation’s Performing Arts program focuses on achieving long-term results by providing multi-year grants to leading organizations in the disciplines of music, theatre and dance. Annual giving in the area of the performing arts has averaged approximately $30 million per year since 2005. In 2004 The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation was awarded a National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists and arts patrons by the United States government. www.mellon.org
Center Theatre Group is the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that supports the Mark Taper Forum, the Ahmanson Theatre, the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, and a significant number of play development and arts education initiatives in Southern California.  The mission of Center Theatre Group is to provide theatre of the highest caliber to the rich, diverse communities of Southern California.

The Weinstein Company Can Use 'The Butler' Title

Harvey Weinstein recently released a statement regarding the MPAA’s approval to allow the Weinstein Company to use The Butler title:

"We are thrilled this has all come to an end and has been resolved.  The MPAA's overturning of their original decision to now allow the use of 'butler' in the title is a victory for Lee Daniels, the film's 28 investors who believed in it, America’s greatest attorney David Boies, and especially in the memory of my friend and the film's producer Laura Ziskin.  Now we can focus on the importance of Lee Daniels' film, the amazing performances by Forest, Oprah and the incredible cast who spent countless months bringing this story about American history and civil rights to screen."  Harvey Weinstein, TWC Co-Chairman.

On Fri., July 19, prior to the MPAA’s decision, The Weinstein Company had enlisted the help of some of the nation’s civil rights leaders.  The company distributed the following press release.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) acknowledged today the support of three of the nation's leading civil rights activists in the dispute with Warner Bros over use of the film title THE BUTLER. They are:

* Reverend Jesse Jackson, Founder and President, Rainbow PUSH Coalition

* Ben Jealous, President & CEO of NAACP

* Roy Innis, National Chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)

TWC is currently in arbitration with Warner Bros., with the help of renowned attorney David Boies, over the use of the title. An appeal on the case, which was originally ruled in favor of Warner Bros by the MPAA, began today at 1pm ET/10am PT. TWC is presently set to release a film of this name, directed by Lee Daniels and starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, on August 16th. Warner Bros alleges that the rights to the title belong to them, as the company also released a film called THE BUTLER in 1916.

Jackson, Jealous and Innis released a joint statement today, saying: "We are all watching and waiting for the results of today's arbitration and hoping that Warner Bros and the MPAA make the right decision on this important movie about civil rights."

RED 2 Packs A Summer Blockbuster Punch

By Darlene Donloe

If you saw RED, you’ll be happy to know that the sequel, RED 2, offers up even more of the fast-paced fun. Not taking itself too seriously RED 2 delivers on its campy, stylish and over-the-top antics. It’s a high-octane

In RED 2, opening nationwide today, once again the films centers on a group of former CIA assassins who are retired and extremely dangerous. This time the rag tag, superior government agents try to save the world from a nuclear bomb in this second adaptation of Warren Ellis' acclaimed DC Comics graphic novels.

This time, Frank reunites his elite team of operatives to a global quest through Paris, London and Moscow to track down a missing, next generation lethal device that can change the balance of world power. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the super weapon. Outgunned, Frank and his crew have to rely on their cunning wits, old-school skills and each other to save the world.

 (l-r) Anthony Hopkins, Bruce Willis,
John Malkovich and Mary Louise Parker

Bruce Willis is back as Frank Moses who used to be a hired gun for the CIA. Along with Marvin (John Malkovich), and Victoria (Helen Mirren), Frank's specialty was carrying out contracts that the government didn't want the public to know about. These days, Frank and his old gang are all retired, but the powers that be are still concerned that they know too much.  This time they hire Victoria to kill Frank.  If that were not enough, one of Frank’s former colleagues, Han Cho Bai (Byung Hun Lee) is also out to kill him. Along for the ride and for all the shenanigans is Mary Louise Parker, who plays Frank’s girlfriend, Sarah.  Convinced their life is getting stale, Sarah nudges Frank to get back into the killing business. She, too, would like to become one of the bad guys, much to Frank’s chagrin

With a cast as charming as this, it’s know wonder why RED 2 works. Willis is Willis. No need in him being anyone else. The Willis thing is working for him. Malkovich is hysterical as the off-center, but clear as a button Marvin, who happens to be Frank’s best friend.  Anthony Hopkins joins this cast as Bailey, a scientist who has developed a weapon of mass destruction that can go undetected.  Because he knows too much the government squirreled him away for about 30 years. Lee is an internationally known actor and martial arts expert, who brings a spark to the film. But, Helen Mirren steals the movie. Not only is she stunningly beautiful, her role is physical and calls for wit, acting and a lot of action. Mirren nails it.

HELEN MIRREN

RED 2 is a roller coaster ride. In this summer blockbuster you don’t know who is a bad guy and who is a good guy. You don’t know who is playing whom. And just when you think you’ve figured it out – there they go changing the whole thing again.

RED 2 is so much fun. It’s a summer popcorn movie. Now, to be sure, there is a lot of gratuitous violence in the film, but it’s overshadowed by the film’s humor.

The best part of this film is watching veteran actors ham it up on scream with flair and style. Brilliant!

RED 2, directed by Dean Parisot and written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, stars Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Mary Louise Parker, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta Jones, Byung Hun Lee, Neal McDonough and Brian Cox.

 Byung Hun Lee

Summit Entertainment Presents A di Bonaventura Pictures Production, RED 2, Running Time: 116 minutes; RATED PG-13 for pervasive action and violence including frenetic gunplay, and for some language and drug material.

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likeable), O (OK) and E (excellent), RED 2 gets an O (OK).
