Kathy Griffin Brings "Like A Boss' To Taper

Two-time Emmy and Grammy Award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin brings her newest show, “Like A Boss,” next Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at 8 p.m. to the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. “Like A Boss” is part of an on-going 80-city tour and will play a total of four performances at the Taper through November 7.

Kathy Griffin says she has “a self-diagnosed, standup comedy disorder” and “must share my thoughts on President-Elect Trump, Caitlyn (Jenner), LAST WEEK'S Madonna concert, oh, did I mention I was in Eddie Murphy's hotel room in my pajamas?” She will pull back the curtain on these and many more known personalities in an ever-changing show that is inspired by this year’s political landscape and her personal run-ins with celebrities and other “questionable figures.”

Three weeks ago, Ms. Griffin was the ONLY female to present Eddie Murphy with the prestigious Mark Twain Prize at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Kathy Griffin made history in 2013 with her sixth consecutive Grammy nomination and first win for Best Comedy Album. In 2013, Kathy was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for writing and starring in an unprecedented 20 televised stand-up specials - more than any comedian in history.

Mariea Antoinette Hopeful For Grammy Nod

Urban-jazz harpist will release a funky disco rendition of “Gloria” for the holiday season as GRAMMY® voters consider her “Straight from the Harp: Special Edition” for nominations in five categories.

SAN DIEGO (30 October 2015): She’s been spreading good tidings of soulful R&B-jazz grooves to listeners around the world all year and now harpist Mariea Antoinette is hoping GRAMMY® voters will recognize her innovative sonicscapes with a nomination in five award categories for her second album, “Straight from the Harp: Special Edition.” The holiday season will be in full cheer by the time the nominations are announced in December and Antoinette will help set the mood with a sterling rendition of “Gloria (Angels We Have Heard on High)” that will be available digitally from iTunes and CD Baby on November 15.

On her sophomore album, “Straight from the Harp: Special Edition,” a Best Contemporary Instrumental Album entry, Antoinette was determined to open the R&B and contemporary jazz frontiers to exciting new aural possibilities with harp as the protagonist on the critically-praised set of originals, R&B-funk classics, hip hop beats, improvisational jazz, edgy rock and celestial ambiance produced by Emmy winner and two-time GRAMMY® nominee Allan Phillips. The result is a Billboard Top 5 contemporary jazz album that made several singles into radio playlist favorites while establishing the identity of Antoinette’s distinctive sound that proficiently mixes genres with the dare of a fearless alchemist, the defiance of a revolutionist and the cool swagger of a visionary artist. Antoinette’s unique approach has made her a Best New Artist contender and along with Phillips, a Best Arranging/Composer entrant. Her delicate touch on “Spend Some Time (With You)” is under consideration for Best Jazz Improvised Solo. Confirming Antoinette’s versatility, “A Single Dance,” featuring vocalist Chanel Fields on the cut sequined with Antoinette’s sparkling harp over a hip shaking R&B track, is up for Best Pop Single.

Placing her sound concept into a holiday context on “Gloria,” Antoinette takes her ancient stringed instrument to a disco party, struts her stuff Soul Train style and ushers in the season with revere and revelry on an imaginative take of the Christmas gem. The single will be shipped to radio stations next month, promising to festively light up the airwaves and charts.

Blake Aaron's Hot Streak Continues With 'Europa'

ALISO VIEJO (28 October 2015): In literary vernacular, soul-jazz guitarist Blake Aaron’s “Soul Stories” is a gripping page turner. “Europa,” the latest single issued from his fifth album, is quickly conquering the country after scoring airplay on SiriusXM and over 40 radio stations on the first day of release, vaulting the single into a tie as the No. 1 most added track on the BDS Billboard chart. It’s a strong indication that the jazz-rock instrumental composed by Carlos Santana and provides Aaron the platform to use his electric guitar to serenade, scream and seduce simultaneously could become the fifth single from “Soul Stories” to hit the Billboard Top 10. The timing couldn’t be more perfect because GRAMMY® voters are currently considering the album for award nominations in seven categories.

It had been eight years since Aaron released an album, but he kept a constant presence in the marketplace by consistently crafting hit singles – four Top 10s with two peaking in the Top 5 - that comprise the core of “Soul Stories.”  The critically-hailed collection of contemporary jazz, R&B, Latin and funk “stories” released last May by Innervision Records is up for GRAMMY® nominations in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album and Album of the Year categories.

Individual songs culled from the set - Aaron’s first that is entirely self-produced -are also under consideration for GRAMMY® nominations. An elegant Brazilian jazz outing, “Story of My Life” made the long-form ballot as Best Instrumental Composition as did the rousing anthem “Story of the Blues.” The Top 5 retro disco-pop energizer “Groove-O-Matic” and “Encantadora,” the latter highlighted by soaring flute flourishes from Najee, are candidates for Best Arrangement Instrumental. Jazz crooner Spencer Day guests on the head-bobbing hipster “You’re the One for Me,” a Best Arrangement Vocals contender.

In addition to touring and playing on, writing and producing recordings for other artists as a long-time first-call session ace, Aaron hosts a weekly radio show, “Blake Aaron Live with Tina Anderson,” which is nationally syndicated.

Thelma Houston Takes Her Show On The Road

Thelma Houston

By Darlene Donloe

After 45 years of performing and 23 studio albums Thelma Houston is still rockin’.

The iconic and legendary singer whose 1977 anthem Don’t Leave Me This Way garnered her a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance, hasn’t missed a beat.

This weekend the songstress, who has been featured on American Idol and America’s Got Talent, brings her musical stylings to the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood in Chris Isaacson Presents Thelma Houston: My Motown: Music, Memories, and More.

Her new 90-minute show takes fans on a musical journey through her hit-filled career.

I recently caught up with Houston to discuss the show and her career.

DD: Describe the show. What can audiences expect?

TH: The first line I speak in my show after I’ve been singing a little while is: “This is my musical history.”  That’s what it is. It’s my musical history starting from the idea when I was initiated by my principal in junior high school.  He thought I could have a career.   Then we move on to my time at Capitol Records, ABC Dunhill and Motown.

DD: Did you write this show?

TH: I didn’t write it, but I had all these experiences.  In this show I do a Motown medley about eight minutes long. It’s every song that was a hit on Motown. I’ve been doing that for years because when I started on the road, I hadn’t had a big hit record yet. A genius arranger named Gil said he’d put together a medley of songs that will make people get up out of their seat. He said I needed to have that kind of song.

People have been asking me over the years –did you record any of those songs?  I didn’t want to do a Motown revue. I started thinking about my experiences with people that I really admired. People like Smokey Robinson. I did Carnegie Hall with him. I also worked with the Four Tops and The Temptations. Stevie Wonder produced something for me.

DD: What was it like to be a Motown artist?

TH: I didn’t join the Motown label until they moved to LA. They started MoWest – that’s when I joined. For me it was a dream come true. I always wanted to be on the Motown label. My biggest hit came while at Motown. The name is powerful.  Growing up those people were my peers.  To me it was like going to a college or university because you learn how to work with different people, how to be professional, getting the job done, being able to work with any number of producers and knowing the material. It all shaped you and made you a professional.

DD: In 1977 your career hit meteoric status changed with the hit song, Don’t Leave Me This Way.  You won a Grammy Award for that song. You’ve been singing it for a long time. Do you ever get tired of singing that song?

TH: NO! I’m probably one of a few people when asked would say, ‘No’, I don’t get tired. For me, if you don’t have a hit record your exposure is limited. That’s unfortunate.  That song was it for me. It gave me my career. A hit will give you 10, 15 even 20 years. In my case it’s also been in movies. It’s in the movie, The Martian right now. As a result of the song, I have four bookings next summer for the Pride Festival.  I never get tired.

DD: Don’t Leave Me This Way has been your signature song since the 70s when disco was king. Do you miss disco?

TH:  Disco got so much attention. Some rebelled against the sound. In a way I see it. In a way some people thought they could sing anything with a beat. They thought they could put any kind of words to it. The good thing about this music is - this past summer I was invited to sing on the shore in New Jersey. On the show were groups like the Village People – we sold out. People were having such a good time.  I have some corporate dates where I play their conventions. On the closing night they give their people a big disco party. It’s still popular. I have no shame that my hits were from that era.

DD: After all these years – what happens when you hit the stage?

TH: I’m always a bit nervous and apprehensive. I hope it never goes away. I’m excited after all these years. I’m still grateful that this is a way I can earn a living. You take a big risk when you’re your own boss. Next week I’m in New Orleans. I have something in December. I don’t. know what’s happening in February. It’s all day to day. I’m so happy I chose to do this. I thank God and I’m grateful. I’m a fortunate person.

DD: What is the secret to staying relevant?

TH: I have kids and grandkids. They will keep me relevant. They tell me what’s going on.  I like a lot of music that’s out there right now. I have to keep it together. I believe in exercising. I’m not trying to stay young, but rather grow old gracefully.   I can’t believe I have 90 minutes of stuff. How am I going to remember it all? You just gotta keep going.

DD: What does music and performing do for you?

TH: Well, there are times when I like silence, too. Good music gives me a happy feeling. I like gospel, jazz, rock n roll and R&B.  I have to feel there is something about it that’s real. When I hear music or sing, I feel something within my body. I wish I could verbalize it. It’s a very strong feeling. It’s powerful. If it’s real, I feel it.

DD:  How do you get up for a show?  Do you have any rituals?

TH: It’s a 90-minute show. I stay consistent with my exercising. I also go to my vocal coach, the same one I’ve been going to for 30 years. I run. I try to do vocal warm ups. I run the stairs to open my voice up.

DD: The music industry has changed over the years. Your thoughts about today’s music?

TH: It depends. Right now I’m into the Weeknd. (she sings) “I can’t feel my face when I’m with you.” I’ve been liking that for a while. I bought it.  I also like Beyonce, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monae. There are a lot of people I like. I still like Aretha Franklin. In the era I came from – there were so many good singers. There were singers like Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle. The vocalists now, well, there just aren’t as many as in my day, but they still bring something to the table.

'Beasts Of No Nation' - A Heart-Wrenching Tale

By Darlene Donloe

Beasts of No Nation (Netflix) is one of those movies that stays with you long after you’ve left the theater. It’s intense, disturbing, raw, violent, real, brutal, scary, jaw-dropping and, most of all, exceptional!

Shot on location in Ghana, the film is based on the experiences of Agu, a West African child soldier fighting in the civil war of an unnamed African country.

But the story starts we he was just a normal boy living a normal life with his family. However, his country is on the brink of civil war. Once the war hits his village, Agu’s family is separated. Agu stays with his father, who eventually gets killed in the war. Agu runs for his life into the jungle only to become entangled with a group of guerilla soldiers helmed by a vicious commandant, played by the always interesting and chameleonic Idris Elba, who is known for taking on a variety of roles.  Agu is effectively played by Abraham Attah, whose face says so much more than any of the film’s dialogue.

Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and written by Fukunaga and Uzodinma Iweala, based on his novel of the same name, this film will make everyone sit up and take notice.

Agu is forced to become a man quickly in order to survive. He’s asked to do unspeakable things that pull at his heart, mind and soul. Agu is indoctrinated into the ranks as the Commandant trains him to cope with his pain through violence. He soon learns how to use a gun and becomes accustomed to the duties of a full-time soldier.

It’s heartbreaking to watch Agu try to traverse one harrowing, violent and atrocious experience after another.

Idris Elba as The Commandant in Beasts Of No Nation

“Who wants to fight? Who wants to fight?,” blares The Commandant as he prepares his warriors for battle.

There are several battles going on in this drama.  There are several internal battles going on with all of the soldiers as well as the commandant. All of the battles whether real or inside someone’s head – can all be destructive.

Although it has a tough subject matter for a film, Beasts of No Nation is an important film and a worthy opponent.

Great and noteworthy performances by Elba and Attah, who is a star.   The film is chock full of non-actors who were enlisted as extras.  The result is one of the gutsiest films of the year with a stirring, emotive cast.

(l) Abraham Attah as Agu in Beasts Of No Nation

In the end, Beasts of No Nation is a heart-wrenching tale of a young boy's loss of goodness and the strength he must develop to survive.

Beasts of No Nation was the first title in Netflix’s initiative to push the boundaries of the theatrical initiative.

Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and written by Fukunaga and Uzodinma Iweala (based on the novel by)

On the DONLOE SCALE:  D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L Likable, O (oh, yeah) and E (excellent) Beasts Of No Nation gets an E (excellent).

Running time: 136 minutes.

Morris Chestnut and Nicole Murphy Host DESTINY Moscato Launch In Houston

Nicole Murphy and Morris Chestnut

(Houston) Red Styxx Beverage’s DESTINY Moscato launch event hosted by brand ambassadors Morris Chestnut (“The Best Man,” “Boyz n The Hood,” FOX TV’s “Rosewood”) and Nicole Murphy (VH1’s “Hollywood Exes”) brought glitz, glamour and Yazz The Greatest from the hit television show “Empire” to perform before thousands in Houston at the exclusive party.

Big Tigger joined as DJ for the occasion which took place at the Music World Entertainment Center and was attended by VH1’s “Hollywood Exes” Sheree Fletcher and Shamicka Lawrence as well.

The spirited performance by Yazz included crowd favorites “Drip Drop” and “You’re So Beautiful” from “Empire” along with original material from his forthcoming projects.

It shut the city down and Murphy was very pleased.

“It's no secret that I look at Houston as my second home.  But seeing all the support … made me realize how much love … the city of Houston shows me and my entire DESTINY team,” Murphy said.

Chestnut enjoyed his time in Houston as well.

“The launch event was a great turn out; one that I was happy to be a part of. Introducing people to the brand and giving them a taste of something I believe in was fun,” Chestnut said.

He added that people are in store for a treat when they pop a DESTINY Moscato bottle.

“I think people should drink it because it’s a premium moscato with double the potency. It is a smooth, nice tasting premium moscato” he added.

YAZZ

DESTINY Moscato has unique blends of both sweet and citrus flavors with the effervescence of fine champagne. It is vented and bottled in Texas.

The launch event included customized drinks entitled the “The Nicole,” which featured Murphy’s favorite “Ruby” version, while “The Morris” highlighted the “Diamond” version.

Mark Thierry and Greshaun Fulgham, founders and owners of Red Styxx Beverage and DESTINY Moscato have set their sights on taking the minority-owned company and their ultra-premium sparkling moscato to the top.

Fulgham, who serves as President, said that there is more to DESTINY than the high alcohol quality.

“It is a multi-dimensional lifestyle brand that is manifested by both Morris and Nicole and the way they live their lifestyle,” Fulgham said.
