Jade Wheeler Stars In Drama, The Originalist

Jade Wheeler and Edward Gero

By Darlene Donloe

The Originalist, a play written by John Strand and directed by Molly Smith, takes an up-close-and-personal look at the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. It takes place in and around Washington, D.C., during the 2012-2013 term of the U.S. Supreme Court.

It doesn’t exactly sound like a production that will have audiences flocking to buy tickets. After all Scalia, who died February 13, 2016, wasn’t exactly thought to be a warm and fuzzy figure. In fact, he was arguably considered one of the most combative and polarizing jurists in history. That being said, the play, currently running at the Pasadena Playhouse through May 7, 2017, is not only a popular show, it’s doing exactly what it’s meant to do – not change anyone’s opinion of the man, his views or ideas, but rather to make people think and then think again. Who knew Scalia had a wicked sense of humor? He was actually funny.

When a bright, liberal law school graduate named Cat embarks on a nerve-wracking clerkship with Scalia, she discovers him to be both an infuriating sparring partner and an unexpected mentor.

The three-person play, which premiered at the Arena Stage, The Mead Center for American Theater, Washington, D.C., on March 6, 2015, stars four-time Helen Hayes Award recipient Edward Gero as Scalia, Brett Mack as Brad and Jade Wheeler as Cat, his liberal law clerk.

Wheeler, an army brat whose father was in the military, calls Washington, D.C. home although she grew up with her two older sisters and half-brother “kind of all over.”

A thespian that honed her craft from coast to coast, Wheeler went to George Mason University in Virginia. She trained twice at acting workshops in France at Ferme de Trielle, in Spain at The Actors Space and in Ireland at The Gaiety School of Acting. She also trained at several acting workshops in D.C.
Jade Wheeler

I recently caught up with the feisty, amiable Wheeler to discuss her role in the play and how her involvement has or hasn’t changed her opinion of the now deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

DD:  Describe The Originalist.

JW:  I like to basically say it’s a political drama that is, sort of investigating civil discourse and how we all have, sort of, taken sides. It feels like the good guys against the bad guys. Everyone thinks they are the good guys.

DD: You played Cat before. How has the character evolved since you first played her at the Asolo Repertory Theater in Florida?

JW: I played Cat at the Asolo. It was my first time with the character and the piece. There, I was still sort of feeling her out. Sometimes you put on a new garment and you say, “How do I feel in this?”  You eventually become comfortable and you’re really in there. It’s like a glove. At Asolo, because I was new to the role, I was still thinking a lot about it and becoming aware. This time it feels lived in. Now we get to go deeper into the character and process the relationship.  Not to say it was on the surface at Asolo. It’s just that now the words are really in my body and mind.  We’ve lived and we’re all in different places now. Even the audience hears something different.  When we first started the show on Inauguration Day 2017 – it was tense in the country. Now we’ve been living with the administration for a few months. Things have shifted. We’ve lived and breathed it a bit more. Jan. 20, 2017, we opened at Asolo. Audiences were holding their breath. Imagine after the women’s march and after Neil Gorsuch was voted in (as the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States) – all of the political and social events that have been happening, the audience is bringing those experiences into the theater, even though the play takes place in 2012-2013. This show is very interesting.

DD:  Tell me about your character, Cat, and why you wanted to play her.

JW: So, Cat is the clerk in the play. She acknowledges that she and Scalia are more alike then she had thought earlier on – in their personalities and even in superficial ways. Both of their fathers were professors of literature. They both went to Harvard. She is tough as nails. She loves a good argument. She loves law. She loves to study and know that what she is saying is right. She is willing to learn. She’s a nice, juicy character. She’s someone any actor would love to play. She’s passionate and does everything 100%. She has her flaws like anyone else. She’s not afraid to admit that. She’s proud and humble. She shows a brave face, but she knows how to check in and say this is what I need in order to grow and become a better person. That’s what’s really beautiful about her. That’s her fighting spirit.

DD: How did you prepare for this show?

JW:  When I found out I booked the role, immediately I started going through the script and highlighting names for the different court justices and for the presidents as well. In this play, I wanted to know a lot more about them so I could have a valid opinion so that when a name is brought up, I have an opinion and feeling about it. I also highlighted court cases. Cat has very strong feelings about them. That was the dramaturgical portion. I’m always thinking what is her history and background and relationship to these other people. I think about what the playwright has given me and what it is that I already know?

DD: What do you think about Scalia now that you’ve lived with the character?

JW:  To be honest, I’ve never been hugely political. I’ve been pretty objective. I’m not going to say he was my favorite. I never had strong negative feelings about him either.  I’ve taken things with a grain of salt. I’ve always been a bit of a devil’s advocate. I learned about his personal side – the stuff you don’t see. I learned about his sense of humor and the relationship he had with his colleagues.

DD:  Do you and your character agree philosophically?

JW: As actors we always have something with our characters. The starting point is to find a commonality. Find a truth. That’s the way that we can perform something and breathe life into our characters.  Cat and I both want a pure freedom for everyone.  Some saw Scalia as Mr. Far Right!

DD: In an early scene, Cat tells the justice: “You are probably the most polarizing figure in American civic life.”  Do you feel the same way?

JW:  Maybe. In 2012, I think Scalia was the hot button topic. People loved him or hated him.

DD: Why should audiences come see this show?

JW:  I think the audiences should see the show because I’m the one that thinks people should see everything. I like to see everything, especially if I know nothing about it. I try to see as much as possible to constantly challenge myself and keep an open mind. Some audiences after the show say they didn’t think they would come see a show about Scalia. They say they are surprisingly pleased because they didn’t think they would enjoy watching something about him. They came in one way and left another. We’re not out to change your opinion. The show is setting out to say something about the conversation.  Audiences need to see the show because we all need to grow and expand.
DD: What do you like about Cat and what don’t you like about Cat?

JW:  I love Cat. She’s amazing. She’s like a superhero. It makes me wish that Jade was a bit more like her at her age.

Jade Wheeler

DD: How do you prepare to go onstage? Any rituals?

JW: It depends on the show. With some shows it’s a vocal warm up or stretching. With a historic character I would make sure I’m walking as that person and getting in their voice. With Cat, she’s very grounded and put together. I have to make sure my (hair) bun is tight and that I’m grounded. Her voice is a bit more commanding than mine. I get into her vocal range. I like to write in her notepad. I write notes on the legal pad. The rituals are the writing and some shake out.

DD: What do you mean by shake out?

JW: I literally just shake. Get some oxygen to your blood. I do it to get out of Jade’s body and into Cat’s.

DD: What are you most proud of in your career and why?

JW: I think that answer changes often. Right now I’m most proud of doing a show that is so important and relevant. I’m really proud of this project. It’s making an impact on people. I’m happy to be working as an actor.

DD: Why did you want to be an actress?

JW: I actually wanted to be a paleontologist. I love dinosaurs. I thought I’d be excavating bones. Then, my father was in the military. We traveled a lot. When we came back to the states my mother put us in a drama camp one summer.  At that point I didn’t want to do paleontology anymore. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I decided to major in theater.  I graduated from George Mason University where I majored in theater and minored in French. I graduated and didn’t know what I was going to do.

DD: What is the one thing you have to do – in order to consider yourself successful in this biz?

JW: That again is something where the answer changes often. Not having to work part time in restaurants and bars.  I have a bucket list of theaters I want to work with.  I want to do important, meaningful work. That’s all I can really ask for. Traveling for my art has always been important to me. It’s huge. It forces us to constantly reevaluate ourselves. It’s a constant learning thing. My dream is to perform in France, in French. That’s my next level of pure success.  There isn’t just one definition for success.

DD: What’s next for you after this show?

JW: We close here May 7, then we're going to Washington, D.C. and then Chicago. After that, I go directly to Miami to perform at the GableStage. I’m doing The Legend of Georgia McBride. It’s here at the Geffen right now. Then I go back to D.C. and pick up with this show.

DD: It sounds like you’re very busy.

JW:  I’m never busy enough.

The Originalist, Pasadena Playhouse, 39 S. El Molino Avenue, Pasadena, California; 8 p.m., Tues. – Fri.; 4 and 8 p.m. Sat., and 2 p.m., Sunday. (There will be one Sunday evening performance at 7 p.m. on April 30); $25 – $80; For information: PasadenaPlayhouse.org, 626-356-7529.

$1 Million Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative will Support
Center Theatre Group’s Involvement in Individual Commissioning Arrangements with
Goodman Theatre, the National Theatre, Royal Court Theatre and Second Stage Theater

Center Theatre Group Artistic Director Michael Ritchie announced separate co-commissioning partnerships with four internationally renowned theatres. Chicago’s Goodman Theatre, London’s Royal Court Theatre and National Theatre, and New York’s Second Stage Theater have each individually joined with Center Theatre Group to commission multiple works over the next decade.  In addition, choreographer/director Matthew Bourne, playwright Danai Gurira and director Anna D. Shapiro have expanded their relationships with Center Theatre Group as Associate Artists.

A $1 million grant from the Edgerton Foundation will support Center Theatre Group’s portion of co-commissions from playwrights such as Jon Robin Baitz (Pulitzer finalist and Tony nominee), Will Eno (Pulitzer finalist), Danai Gurira (Tony nominee), Lisa Kron (Tony winner), Young Jean Lee (Obie winner), Lynn Nottage (two-time Pulitzer winner), Qui Nguyen (Steinberg Award winner), Al Smith (Sunday Times Playwriting Award winner) and Paula Vogel (Pulitzer winner). Titled the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative, the grant is intended to allow Center Theatre Group to commission at least two shows annually with each of the four theatres.

“In recognition of Center Theatre Group’s long-standing mission to develop new art for the American stage, we are excited to offer commissioning funds for more than 50 new plays in the Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative in partnership with four other theatres in Chicago, New York and London. By jointly developing each of these new plays with two talented theatre staffs, we hope to increase the number of productions that will journey to many regional theatres, Broadway and the West End,” said Brad Edgerton, MD, President, Edgerton Foundation.

“The Edgerton Foundation Playwrights Initiative is allowing us to make bigger, bolder investments in some of the world’s best playwrights,” said Michael Ritchie. “Co-commissioning with some of the top theatres in the U.S. and London allows us to put our resources together in support of the creation and production of new work around the world—with a clear path to Broadway thanks to our new connection to Second Stage and their Helen Hayes Theater.”

'Absinthe' Is Both Raunchy And Entertaining

There is something risqué, weird, dangerous, hilarious, shocking and wildly entertaining happening on the roof of LA Live.

It’s called Absinthe by Spiegelworld and it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.  Called the “Greatest Show In The History Of Las Vegas,” Absinthe is an in-your-face, steroid mixture of adult-themed vaudeville, burlesque and the circus. It’s chock full of astonishing acrobatics and wild stunts.  The F-bombs fly freely as does the explicit and graphic sexual references.

Even if you're not a prude, your blush will blush.

So, if you are the least bit of a square or someone who gets offended easily, you’d do well to steer clear of Absinthe. But you’d be missing an incredible experience. This show is a must see!

This isn’t your grandmother’s circus - unless she is open-minded and too cool for school.

Gazillionaire

The show, set in an intimate setting, is produced and hosted by a foul-mouthed and hilarious man named Gazillionaire, who keeps the showing moving along with some of the most off-color repartee and offensive antics you’ll ever see or hear.

Gazillionaire is a gold-toothed, gold-shoed, gold jacket wearing, slick-haired, scumbag who keeps the show flowing. His partner in crime is the diminutive, yet equally vulgar Daisy Dibble.

This show is too much fun. From start to finish, audiences are either on the edge of their seat in amazement or on the edge of their seat in hysterics.

This is probably as politically incorrect as any show could get.  Be warned! No one is safe!  Gazillionaire and Daisy Dibble talk about gays, blacks, whites, hispanics, women, men, Republicans, Democrats, the bald, the hairy, the rich and the poor.  It’s all done in good fun resulting in falling-in-the-aisles laughter.

You’ve never seen anything like this. Although there is a comedic element to Absinthe, make no mistake about it, the acts are genuine displays of mind-blowing talent. The show is 90-minutes of no-holds-barred phenomenal acts.

The show features miraculous acts performed by sexy performers with envious, incredibly chiseled and toned bodies.

The show starts off with a jaw-dropping display of balance as Edmund, the show’s bartender, tries to make his way to the heavens by balancing himself on chairs stacked on top of each other. There is a group called The Lost Boys, who rock the place with their gymnastic routines. Los Dos Tacos are two gymnasts who do an eye-opening routine on the horizontal bars. Lady Bubblelicious stretches and contorts high above the crowd in a bubble. The Moscow City Rollers display an incredible amount of strength in a skating act that will leave you scratching your head. Misty West 88th Street gets the men going with her slow and sexy striptease.  The Silicon Valley Girls twist and turn – sometimes simultaneously in the air. Max Matterhorn likes to balance on poles. His act is mesmerizing.

Absinthe is now in its sixth sold-out year at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.  The show is in Los Angeles through May 28.

Absinthe is recommended for ages 18 and above.

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likeable), O (oh, yeah) and E (excellent), Absinthe gets an E (excellent).

Absinthe, Spiegelworld Tent at L.A. Live’s Event Deck, 1005 Chick Hearn Ct., Los Angeles CA 90015; playing now through May 28; Tues.-Wed., 7:30 p.m.; Thurs.-Sat., 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; Sundays 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.;  prices start at $49;  For information: AbsintheLA.com.

Following the show’s most viewed season in five years where the finale came down to 13-year-old singing sensation Grace VanderWaal winning over spellbinding illusionist duo The Clairvoyants, “America’s Got Talent” is back for its 12thseason with creator and judge Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel, as well as new host Tyra Banks.

“THE CARMICHAEL SHOW” — WEDNESDAY, MAY 31 AT 9 P.M.
Inspired by the life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, the series follows Jerrod and his opinionated North Carolina family as they navigate topics that all families face in America today. Jerrod often finds himself debating such issues with his old-school father, Joe (David Alan Grier); his devoutly religious mother, Cynthia (Loretta Devine); his fiancée, Maxine (Amber Stevens West); his social media-loving brother, Bobby (Lil Rel Howery); and Bobby’s outspoken almost-ex-wife, Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish). And somewhere in the middle of all of their disagreeing is the heart of this family.

For its first two seasons, the series has received stellar reviews, including “‘The Carmichael Show’ consistently feels surprising,” from The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times adding, “‘The Carmichael Show’ balances pointed topicality with humor.”

“AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR” — MONDAY, JUNE 12 FROM 8-10 P.M.
The Emmy Award-nominated “American Ninja Warrior” returns for its sixth full season on NBC. Matt Iseman is back as host, along with Akbar Gbajabiamila and co-host Kristine Leahy.  The action-packed series follows competitors as they tackle a series of challenging obstacle courses in both city qualifying and city finals rounds across the country. Those that successfully complete the finals course in their designated region move on to the national finals round in Las Vegas, where they face a stunning four-stage course modeled after the famed Mt. Midoriyama course in Japan. The winner will take home a grand prize of $1 million.

This season the show will make stops in Los Angeles, Calif.; San Antonio, Texas; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Kansas City, Mo.; Cleveland, Ohio; and Denver, Colo., before heading to Las Vegas for the national finals.  Last year “American Ninja Warrior” delivered its most-watched season ever, averaging 7.2 million viewers, and was a top-10 summer series among primetime programs on the Big 4 networks in every key ratings measure.

“SPARTAN: ULTIMATE TEAM CHALLENGE” — MONDAY, JUNE 12 FROM 10-11 P.M.
Inspired by Spartan Race — the creators of the world’s most demanding obstacle course races — “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge” raises the bar on team competitions. Groups of friends, families, co-workers and more must work together to test their determination, endurance and will. Teams of five will compete on one the most demanding courses ever devised and will have to push through the pain to win $250,000.

In its first season last year, “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge” averaged a 1.3 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 4.2 million viewers overall and delivered a strong upscale audience, indexing at a 118 among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes (with 100 representing an average concentration of those homes).

“LITTLE BIG SHOTS: FOREVER YOUNG” — WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21 FROM 8-9 P.M.
Following up on the phenomenal success of “Little Big Shots,” in which kids brought their amazing talents to a primetime audience, “Little Big Shots: Forever Young” is where young-at-heart seniors will showcase their hidden talents, vibrant personalities and incredible wisdom. The comedy/variety series, from Warner Horizon Television, will be executive produced by Ellen DeGeneres and series host Steve Harvey.  As the #1 new series last season among total viewers and the most watched new alterative show in six years, “Little Big Shots” showcased the talent and comedy of the very young. Now the spotlight turns to America’s seniors, where Harvey will showcase undiscovered rare talents and hysterical encounters with musicians, singers, dancers and every form of “elderkind” in the country. With many years of experience and wisdom, these seniors are sure to delight the audience with their strong opinions, incredible talent, and heartwarming stories.

“THE WALL” — THURSDAY, JUNE 22 FROM 8-9 P.M.
With more than $12 million on the line every night, and up to $3 million on a drop at four-stories high, “The Wall” was built for one purpose — to change everyday people’s lives in an instant.  Hosted and executive produced by actor, comedian, author and TV personality Chris Hardwick, “The Wall” offers a pair of deserving teammates life-altering cash prizes. The rules are simple: Get a question correct and a green ball will fall down the wall and add the value of the slot to the players’ winning total. Miss a question and an ominous red ball will fall and deduct the value from the team. Teammates have to work together to build a huge cash prize.  Since debuting earlier this winter, “The Wall” has averaged a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.7 million viewers overall, making it the second-biggest in-season alternative hit on the Big 4 networks in the last five years in total viewers, behind only “Little Big Shots.”

“THE NIGHT SHIFT” — THURSDAY, JUNE 22 FROM 9-10 P.M.
Doctors, nurses and the medical staff at San Antonio Memorial Hospital will be busier than ever during the fourth season of the fast-paced medical drama “The Night Shift.”
The cast includes Eoin Macken, Jill Flint, Brendan Fehr, Robert Bailey Jr., JR Lemon, Tanaya Beatty and Scott Wolf.  Last summer “The Night Shift” averaged a 1.4 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall in “live plus seven day” averages, making it the #1 summer drama on the big 4 networks.

“MIDNIGHT, TEXAS” — TUESDAY, JULY 25 FROM 10-11 P.M.
Based on the best-selling book series by Charlaine Harris (author of the novels that inspired “True Blood”), “Midnight, Texas” stars François Arnaud (“The Borgias”) as Manfred, a charming, powerful psychic who can communicate with spirits and finds safety in Midnight surrounding himself with both human and supernatural allies. Midnight is also home to Bobo, proprietor of Midnight’s local pawn shop (Dylan Bruce, “Orphan Black”); Fiji, a witch who owns the local wiccan shop (Parisa Fitz-Henley, “Luke Cage”); Olivia, a mysterious assassin with a weapon for every occasion (Arielle Kebbel, “The Vampire Diaries”); Joe, an angel who knows all of Midnight’s secrets having been around for millennia (Jason Lewis, “Sex and the City”); Lemuel, a wise vampire with a long history in Midnight (Peter Mensah, “True Blood”); Creek, an aspiring writer with big dreams (Sarah Ramos, “Parenthood”); and Rev. Emilio Sheehan, who can’t resist the pull of a full moon (Yul Vazquez, “Captain Phillips”).

“HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT” — MONDAY, AUG. 7 FROM 10-11 P.M.
“Hollywood Game Night,” hosted by Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner Jane Lynch, returns for a fifth season with celebrities such as Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley from “This Is Us,” and Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash and Nico Santos from “Superstore,” as well as Michael Bolton, NE-YO, Natalie Morales, Mike Colter, Chris Hardwick, Margaret Cho, Gabby Douglas, Matt Iseman, Taye Diggs, RuPaul and many more who will join in the fun as they face off in hilarious party games.  In the series, two contestants are transported from their everyday lives into a once-in-a-lifetime night of fun and celebration as they step beyond the velvet rope and rub shoulders with some of their favorite celebrities and compete for the chance to win up to $25,000. This season features new party games and the winning contestant will be able to choose two celebrities to help them win the grand prize.

“SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: WEEKEND UPDATE” — THURSDAY, AUG. 10 FROM 9-9:30 P.M.
NBC is bringing a late-night institution to primetime with a four-episode order for “Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update.” The half-hour telecast will feature “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che. Additional “Saturday Night Live” cast members will also make appearances.  Weekend Update,” which comments on and satirizes the news and current affairs of the week, has consistently ranked as one of the most popular segments of “Saturday Night Live” throughout the show’s storied 42-year history. Previous “Weekend Update” anchors include Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Curtin, Dennis Miller, Norm Macdonald, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers.

“MARLON” — WEDNESDAY, AUG. 16 FROM 9-10 P.M. (BACK-TO-BACK EPISODES WITH LEAD-IN OF “AGT” LIVE RESULTS SHOWS)
Loosely inspired by the real life of star Marlon Wayans (“In Living Color,” “Scary Movie”), this update to the classic family comedy centers on a loving (but inappropriate) father committed to co-parenting his two kids with his very-together ex-wife. While his misguided fatherly advice, unstoppable larger-than-life personality and unpredictable Internet superstardom might get in the way sometimes, for Marlon family really always does come first — even if he’s the biggest kid of all.
