BHERC AND FILMMAKER JULIE DASH OPTION 'ONE WOMAN'S ARMY'

Filmmaker Julie Dash and Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) have obtained the rights to One Woman’s Army, a book, which tells the little known story of Major Charity Adams, World War II’s highest-ranking African-American woman.  Adams headed the 6888th Postal Battalion’s nearly one thousand women, who moved mountains of mail for millions of American service members and civilians in Europe during the war.
This venture marks BHERC’s first foray into film production.  Since 1996 the organization has annually honored black filmmakers, hosting four major short film festivals; Sistas Doin’ For Themselves, Reel Black Men, Festival at Sea and The African-American Film Marketplace and S.E. Manly Short Film Showcase.   BHERC is also known for the First Weekend Club, which promotes black films and encouraging black filmgoers nationwide to support films the first week they are released.  In 2005, responding to the devastation of gang violence in the inner city, BHERC commissioned five filmmakers to use their talent to effect change.  The organization funded and produced short films on combating gang activity, resulting in “The BHERC Fights Back with Film Media Project.”

Dash will direct and produce the One Woman’s Army project in association with producers Kimberly Ogletree and BHERC’s John Forbes.  They plan to make an 8-hour
mini-series, which is inspired by Adams’ book with a teleplay by Dash.

The story will begin with the 6888th’s deployment, which was made possible by Mary McLeod Bethune, educator and civil rights activist in alliance with Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of the United States.  In the tradition of Band of Brothers, the story will follow three women, who boarded the war ship in New York Harbor and made the dangerous crossing over the Atlantic Ocean during the height of WWII.  Arriving in Birmingham, England, in the dead of winter, they found letters sent to American troops stacked to the ceiling in a frigid railroad station and an even colder military warehouse.  Much of the frosty mail had been there for as long as two years waiting to be sent to soldiers in the field.  While rodents and other vermin are feasting on boxes of home baked cookies, the women of the 6888th were charged with clearing, sorting and delivering the mail.  To accomplish this Herculean task they were forced to work three shifts, seven days a week.

First working in England, the 6888th later moved to Rouen, France.  Although their mission was to booster the moral of American troops by delivering letters from home, their work abroad was shrouded in secrecy.  Because they were black, and they were women, they had to
sleep in segregated barracks, and ate in segregated dining halls.  Nevertheless, they made history by successfully delivering mail to over seven million American stations in Europe.
Dash first came to prominence in 1991 when her film, Daughters of the Dust, was selected to by the Sundance Film Festival for the "From the Collection" series and earned the Excellence in Cinematography Award.  Over the years she has directed noted TV movies, including the highly acclaimed The Rosa Parks Story, starring Angela Bassett, as well as Love Song, Incognito and Funny Valentines, starring Alfre Woodard, CCH Pounder and Loretta Devine.
The Black Hollywood Education & Resource Center, a non-profit, public benefit organization, is designed to advocate, educate, research, develop and preserve the history and future of blacks in the film and television industries.

One of the best and highly-anticipated gifting suites is the invitation-only 4th Annual Valentine Romance Oscar Style Lounge & Party, produced by Hollywood insider Doris Bergman in association with Michelle Lee Faulkner.

Plus, they told me I could donate something to a charity. Whenever that opportunity presents itself, I’m there. I brought four of my own shirts. It’s an opportunity to give back. We’re all in the business of service in one way or another. I’m the repository of something that someone gave to me.”

“I feel so honored to have been invited!,” said Dancing With The Stars dancer Karina Smirnoff.

The stars were gifted with a bunch of high-end goodies that included an array of fashions for him and her including bespoke tuxedoes and suits, skin care, jewelry, fragrance, couture gowns, custom hats, sexy lingerie, couture handbags, the finest in electronics, hand-rolled cigars, gourmet cuisine, delectable sweets, exotic spirits and more!

TV ONE’S AWARD-WINNING UNSUNG SETS NEW VIEWERSHIP RECORDS IN ITS FIFTH SEASON

WINDS UP LATEST SEASON WITH RAY PARKER JR., SHEILA E, DAVID RUFFIN AND WHODINI

February 10, 2012, Silver Spring, MD – TV One’s NAACP Image Award-winning series Unsung is well on its way to its most successful season ever, delivering 27% more homes and 26% more P25-54 viewers than last year, which was the series’ best.  This season, which kicked off on Monday, Jan. 2, has also resulted in the two highest-rated episodes in Unsung’s history in both households and key P25-54 viewers.
Unsung’s Freddie Jackson Jan. 23 premiere ranks as the highest-rated episode ever among households (1.09) with an average of 616,000 homes tuning in, and the Full Force Jan. 30 premiere ranks as the most-watched episode among P25-54 viewers.(Source: Nielsen Media Research: HH and P25-54 Based on Live+3 data. Based on Monday night premiere telecasts through the first five episodes of the season-Vesta Williams, Bobby Womack, Atlantic Starr, Freddie Jackson and Full Force).
Unsung is TV One’s acclaimed series of one-hour biographies celebrating the lives and careers of successful artists or groups who, despite great talent, have not received the level of recognition they deserve or whose stories have never been told. The full picture of black music in America is a rich kaleidoscope of talented artists and so much bigger than acknowledged superstars and household names like Aretha, Whitney, Stevie and Marvin. Many of the greatest have either failed to achieve that same level of superstardom - or have compelling life stories the details of which have largely remained untold.  Ten of black music’s most talented artists and groups are being featured this season through March 12th in all-new episodes of Unsung, TV One’s top-rated and most highly anticipated series, with the late Vesta Williams, Bobby Womack, Atlantic Starr, Freddie Jackson, Full Force, and Millie Jackson having been profiled thus far.
New episodes air Mondays at 10 PM, repeating at 1 AM (all times ET). Please note the revised premiere dates of the Sheila E., David Ruffin and Whodini episodes below:
Ray Parker, Jr. (February 13) - Whether singing, playing guitar, or crafting smooth-sailing hits like ‘Jack and Jill, ‘The Other Woman’ or ‘You Can’t Change That’, Ray Parker Jr. made success look easy. But behind the show-biz façade, Parker was an obsessive musician - a guitarist who’d cut his teeth with Motown’s house band, the Funk brothers, as a teenager, and later played with Stevie Wonder and Barry White. Long before his emergence as a headliner, he’d written hits for White and Chaka Khan, while crafting a Grammy winning single for Leo Sayer - ‘You Make Me Feel Like Dancing’ – for which he never received credit, a hard lesson in business that drove him to contemplate suicide. All of which was just a prelude to Parker’s own Grammy winning triumph with  ‘Ghostbusters’ – and the controversy which followed, in which he stood accused of plagiarizing someone else’s hit.  A double-dose of baby mama drama, family loss, and an ill-advised decision to leave his safe haven at Arista Records accelerated his descent from the top of the charts. But Ray Parker proved unsinkable, and along with testimony from his extended musical family – including Cheryl Lynn, Chaka Khan and Clive Davis - he tells ‘Unsung’ the tale of his still-unfolding journey.
Sheila E. (and the E. family) (February 27) - While the Jacksons, Sylvers and Debarge define family singing groups, the Escovedos are something else: a family that learned how to stay together by playing together.  Even before Sheila E. garnered international celebrity for 80's mega hits "The Glamorous Life" and "A Love Bizarre," her father, brothers and extended family were acclaimed musicians, with associations ranging from Santana to Tito Puente, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Of course, Sheila remains the family’s shining star, whose partnership with Prince on songs like ‘A Love Bizarre’ and ‘Erotic City’ produced plenty of heat on stage and off.  But her rise to the top as a lovely Latina with serious musical chops came with a cost, including serious health issues, and a childhood trauma which would shadow her direction in decades to come. On this episode of ‘Unsung’, Sheila, her father, and her talented siblings come together to trace the remarkable journey of Oakland’s musical first family.
David Ruffin (March 5) - The raspy and anguished lead voice on mega-hits "My Girl," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "I Know (I'm Losing You)," David Ruffin was the center of The Temptations in their peak years. But his expanding ego forced his band mates to cut ties with him in 1968. And with only one significant solo hit, "My Whole World Ended," Ruffin never again reached the heights he'd enjoyed as the swoon-inducing leader of The Tempts. In private life, David was a talented, self-tortured soul, capable of kindness and generosity along with untempered anger. But drug abuse wore him down in the '70s and '80s, costing him precious opportunities to reunite with friends and former bandmates, and damaging his relationships with those closest to his heart. Less than two years after joining The Temptations onstage for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he was found dead from an apparent drug overdose at the age 50. Now, his family, friends and musical associates come together to help ‘Unsung’ portray the tumultuous life and career of a legendary singer.
Whodini (March 12) - With a string of up-tempo, R&B inflected hits in the mid to late 1980's, the New York bred rap trio of Jalil Hutchins, John Fletcher (aka Ecstasy) and Drew Carter (aka Grandmaster Dee) dominated the Billboard charts to become one of rap’s first superstars. Along with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, LL Cool J, RUN-DMC & The Fat Boys, they helped define hip hop’s ‘golden age’ with platinum success. And with hits like "Friends," "Big Mouth" & "Five Minutes of Funk," Whodini mastered a difficult magic trick by making danceable music that was reflective and thoughtful. But along with the perks of success, Whodini battled drug issues, squabbles over money and clashing egos, which ultimately caused the group to break up. Yet the group never completely lost sight of their earlier ambitions, reuniting after realizing they were stronger together than apart. For ‘Unsung’, Whodini’s members tell the story of a fun-loving, trailblazing brotherhood who have survived 3 decades of wild ups and downs.
“We are truly honored that Unsung has become a beloved classic, and that it not only continues to strike a chord with our viewers, but continues to grow its audience,”  said TV One Executive Vice President of Original Programming and Production Toni Judkins.
Launched in January 2004, TV One (www.tvone.tv) serves more than 56 million households, offering a broad range of real-life and entertainment-focused original programming, classic series, movies, and music designed to entertain, inform and inspire a diverse audience of adult black viewers.  In December 2008, the company launched TV One High Def, which now serves 14 million households. TV One is owned by Radio One [NASDAQ: ROIA and ROIAK; www.radio-one.com], the largest radio company that primarily targets African American and urban listeners; and Comcast Corporation [NASDAQ: CMCSA, CMCSK); www.comcast.com], one of the nation’s leading providers of entertainment, information and communications products and services.

MICHAEL JACKSON’S MUSIC SHINES IN “IMMORTAL”

By Darlene Donloe

Fans of the late King of Pop will be thrilled with The Immortal World Tour Cirque Du Soleil, a musical tribute to Michael Jackson that features the incredible acrobatics, dancing and contortions of the famed troupe.

This production combines Michael Jackson music and choreography with Cirque du Soleil creativity to give fans worldwide a unique view into the spirit, passion and heart of the artistic genius.

JAMIE KING

Sponsored by Life Financial, the show is written and directed by Jamie King and features more than 60 international dancers, musicians and acrobats.

Presented by the estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil, it’s a spectacular show, complete with videos on a huge screen, a tight band and a circus-like atmosphere that keeps one’s eyes dancing through the entire extravaganza.

The Immortal World Tour invites the audience inside an imaginary world inspired by Jackson’s Neverland estate. Once inside the gilded gates, the audience finds the Giving Tree a representation of the great oak tree in which Jackson would climb to seek inspiration and write his songs and poems.

It’s clear that Jackson’s fans have not forgotten him. Every time his image is flashed on a huge screen, the audience squeals with delight.

TRAVIS PAYNE

Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour, a two-hour show choreographed by Travis Payne, who worked with Jackson for many years, is a storytelling vehicle that winds its way through the life of the King of Pop from his humble beginnings in Gary, Indiana, to the eventual international throne on which he dominated the world of music.

Of course, what dominates the show is the musical genius of Jackson, who died three years ago at the age of 50.  From his early beginnings with his brothers as the famed Jackson 5, to the music he made during his solo career, the show is filled with hit after hit after hit.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the creative genius of Jackson, there is a lot to tap your feet and snap your fingers to, there are some missteps within the show.

Unfortunately, it was hard to feel connected to some of the dancers, who seemed to be counting their way through the various routines. Some of the acts didn’t quite hit the mark, including a scantily clad woman who takes the stage to play the cello, or the contortionist who danced atop a book.

One of the real missteps was the misuse of Jackson’s signature white, sequined glove. The glove is a soft sculpture that allows the dancers inside to create various hand positions using their full body. A life-sized replica with someone inside flopped all over the stage instead of making a bold statement. It was clearly a missed opportunity.

There is also a giant hat large enough for two performers to hide inside and giant shoes, which directly references Jackson’s famous penny loafers.

There were some stunning visuals.  An acrobat on a pole in the second act rocks the show, as does a high-wire acrobatic duo that nearly steals the show.  There are some flashy dance numbers featuring performers in costumes that light up. The effect is highly visual and an audience favorite.

There are some fantastic moments in the  show, which also features 32 of Jackson’s songs, including Billie Jean, Thriller, Shake Your Body Down to the Groud, Ben, Dancing Machine, Can You Feel It, They Don’t Care About Us, Dangerous, Bad, ABC, Closet and more.

It’s the music that is the driving force of the show as well as the video flashbacks that have audiences on their feet.  The show is a bit disjointed, but true Michael Jackson fans will find it to be a Thriller.

On the Donloe Scale, D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likable), O (OK) and E (excellent), “Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour Cirque du Soleil” gets an O (OK).

Campbell's Labels For Education program is proud to be the official education partner of the GRAMMY In The Schools programs. For more information, please visit
