Disney's The Lion King A Visual and Vocal Triumph

By Darlene Donloe

Disney’s The Lion King has become a beloved part of pop culture history.

The classic coming of age story about a lion cub named Simba avenging the death of his father, Mufasa, and taking his rightful place as The Lion King has long been a fan favorite.

This time around the beloved action-adventure, set to open in theaters July 19, is a live-action remake with a star-studded cast voicing the characters.

Utilizing pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring the iconic characters alive on the big screen, Director Jon Favreau has put together an unforgettable ensemble cast that includes the voices of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. Other cast members include Alfre Woodard, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, and Shahadi Wright Joseph.

The voices enrich each character. It goes without saying the impact James Earl Jones has when he voices a character. He could read the phone book aloud and make it sound like a Shakespearean tome. When Jones voices Mufasa – the screen shakes with power. Chiwetel Ejiofor has that thing – that voice that makes Scar a scary character. His turn as Scar is memorable. Donald Glover brings his own notable flavor to Simba. Beyonce Knowles-Carter does her thing as Nala.  Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Bill Eichner as Timon nearly steals this movie with their hilarity.

The cubs Simba and Nala are too adorbs for words.

The movie is majestic, stunningly gorgeous, emotionally magical and incredibly lifelike. Aesthetically, it’s better than the 1994 original, which was emotionally charming.

Whether in play form or film, The Lion King effectively takes its audience on a fantastic journey to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom, including Simba’s uncle Scar, are celebrating the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own.

Scar would do anything to rule Pride Rock. Anything means Anything!!!  With the help of some friends, Simba has to decide how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.

As a whole, The Lion King is another feather in Disney’s cap.  It brings the story, the jungle and all of its inhabitants to life as only Disney can.
