47th International Film Festival of India First Platform To Debut Qube Wire Distribution Service

Latest digital offering from Qube Cinema to manage distribution of movies screening at the region’s largest film festival

Qube Wire, the newly launched digital cinema distribution service from Qube Cinema, has today announced its partnership with the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), taking place in Goa between November 20-28. As a prelude to the international roll-out of the service, which aims to eliminate the outdated process of physical Digital Cinema Package (DCP) transportation, Qube Wire will act as the official distribution partner for the festival.

Engaged by IFFI, the Qube Wire platform will debut its dedicated festival module, managing the Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) and Key Delivery Messages (KDMs) of screenings at the event. Eliminating the risk of problematic drive failures and corrupted content associated with the physical transit of product, this year the digital platform will act as a centrally operated hub for all content, transforming the distribution process and ensuring KDMs are targeted to the correct screens. Following the festival, Qube Wire will optionally retain content on the platform so content owners can transfer titles to any other festival or distributor in future, simply by assigning additional KDMs.

Launched at this year’s American Film Market, Qube Wire is a unique service offering filmmakers online access to over 130,000 screens around the world that are reachable via the platform, built through partnerships with key international digital cinema companies. Through a highly secure web interface with award-winning security architecture utilizing Thales Hardware Security Modules [HSMs], the new platform offers unmatched protection, and allows filmmakers to quickly generate as many KDMs as required for their encrypted DCPs.

Rajesh Ramachandran, President of Qube Cinema said of the partnership, “The International Film Festival of India has grown over the past several years to become a formidable force in the region’s cultural landscape today, and a voice of authority on Indian cinema. In nurturing new innovations, talents, technologies and cultures globally, the Festival shares a vision with Qube Wire as we aim to strengthen the relationship between filmmakers internationally, and offer unique services to aid the distribution of product to the far corners of our industry. As a brand founded in India, we are proud to reaffirm our support of the region’s cinema at such a prestigious platform and are hopeful that we can continue to connect filmmakers and festivals globally in the future.”

“The Directorate of Film Festivals respects the creativity of all filmmakers and strongly supports any technology and procedures which help film distribution. We are happy to have Qube Wire on board as a technical partner for the 47th International Film Festival of India,” said C. Senthil Rajan, Director, IFFI.

The International Film Festival of India has become a key destination for Indian and international filmmakers and talents working to showcase their projects to an international audience. The festival aims to provide a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of film; contributing to the understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos.

'Sweetie Pie's' Fourth Season Debuts November 19

By Darlene Donloe

The fourth season of OWN’s popular reality show, Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s, is set to debut Saturday, Nov. 19.

Once again, Miss Robbie, her son, Tim, Charles and the rest of the gang, are back with workplace anguish and family drama, sprinkled with moments of levity and lots of reality.

The series is about how Robbie Montgomery (Miss Robbie), who in the 1960’s was a backup singer and former Ikette. When her lung collapsed, she had to hustle to keep her family afloat, so she whipped out her mother’s recipes and turned her second love—cooking, into a soul food empire. Today, with five locations and counting across St. Louis and Los Angeles, Miss Robbie and her son Tim are hoping to expand their brand.

In the season opener Miss Robbie, the owner and creator of Sweetie Pie’s, not only is still at odds with her son, Tim, about the number of restaurants he’s planning on opening, she’s reeling after the murder of her grandson, Andre Montgomery, who was killed in St. Louis after moving there two weeks earlier.  His killer has yet to be brought to justice.  Unfortunately, this is not the first time the family has had to deal with that kind of tragedy. They speak openly about some of the family’s other tragedies.

On upcoming episodes, Tim revisits the prison where he was incarcerated for 10 years, and Miss Robbie joins him “behind the wall” to witness first-hand the shocking reality her son experienced at the young age of 17.   Tim speaks openly about his 10-year stint in prison that started at the age of 17. He talked about touring the now closed Missouri prison and what it felt like to be a resident there.   It was the first time Miss Robbie had seen the conditions in which her son lived for a decade.

Of course, Miss Robbie and Tim are still at odds when it comes to expanding the Sweetie Pie’s brand. After 30 years, Miss Robbie revives her music career, this time doing it her way with exciting opportunities on the horizon.

“Your past does not dictate your future.” – Tim

In the spirit of the holiday season, Miss Robbie and Tim are giving back. More than 400 lbs. of can goods were collected on their behalf - to be given to a local food bank.

I recently caught up with Miss Robbie (MR) and Tim at OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) in Hollywood, to talk about the upcoming season, how they are dealing with their grief and the expansion of the brand.

Tim

Q: Tim, you are very focused about opening a lot of restaurants. Is there a fear of over saturating the market?

TIM: My mom and I, we have an argument going on right now. She thinks enough is enough. In St. Louis we over saturated the market. I was trying to have a Sweetie Pie’s on every corner in St. Louis. We have two in L.A. and maybe another one. My goal for this is for us to be the first national black food chain.  Chinese and Mexican restaurants have national chains. Everybody except African Americans have a food chain. I question why?  I believe it can be done and I believe we can be the ones to do it.

Q: Tim, you mentioned how you like to help men who come out of the prison system. Can you talk about something you do to help guys coming out?

TIM: Before I went to prison there wasn't a restaurant. When I came home 10 years later mom had this restaurant. It wasn’t in my plan to work in the family business. I look for a job. I couldn’t find a job. I went to the restaurant and poured myself into it. A guy came home out of prison and needed a job. I told mom we should give him a shot.  We [Sweetie Pie’s] became a rest haven. The word got out that Sweetie Pie’s would give you a shot. It's a shame that you can tell somebody they are not good enough to wash a dish because they have a past. They have that felony hanging over them. But, that’s how it is today. Sweetie Pie’s is a support system for the underdog.

Q: Miss Robbie, would you like to add something?

MR: When I visited Tim there were a lot of guys who didn't even have a visitor. No one would visit them in prison. Sometimes I would take family members up there when I went to see Tim. I’ve had brothers who were incarcerated.   This was a part of us to give Second Chances.

Q:  Tim, how did your time in prison impact your character?

TIM: I was 17 when I went away.  They have kiddie camps. Being so big they sent me to the big boy camp. A lot of guys breathed on me and looked at me as their son. I had 10 years of plenty of men looked at me as a chance to give back. It made me more serious. When you do that much time it’s always in the back of your head. People don't realize prison - it's hard, but it’s not that hard. You can play chess all day. You look up and two years have passed. While you’re there, people are dying and kids are growing up. They don't prepare you for being out and making it.

Q: Are they people who come out of prison more disciplined at Sweetie Pie’s because they were in prison?

MR: Sometimes. Some just want the job so they can tell their PO (parole officer) they got a job. Most of them we do give a second chance to.

Q: If you could go back what would you do differently?

MR: I have no regrets. I would have done it sooner. I’m older now and getting tired. I love being in a position to help people.

TIM:  Well, if I could go back, I would realize I need to push back on the table once in a while.

Q: How do you keep it together?

MR: It’s not having a son like Tim. He drives me crazy. He’s a handful. When he went to prison he was a mild, meek kid. When he came home a buffalo, I said, “whoa.” It’s really great to have support of your family.

Q: Do you have some dos and don’ts for entrepreneurs?

MR:  Each business has its own lessons. I learned mine was by trial and error.  I tried to pass them on to him [Tim], but he wont’ listen.  He don’t listen. He makes those same mistakes. I always say - be informed about what you’re going to do. Ask somebody who knows. It will save you some steps and mistakes you won’t have to take. Go for it.

Q:  You’re been battling about deciding what you will and won’t use the name for. Have you gotten pass it?
Miss Robbie

MR: We’re still fussing about it. This boy is crazy. I can’t stop him from being my son. We have to get on the same page. I’m hoping we can work it out.

TIM: We’re still fussing with each other.  You put a mountain in front of me, I will try to jump over it. I admit, she’s right. I’ve been running very fast.  I’m trying to be conscious of TV life versus real life and how to use both of them effectively. I want to continue opening restaurants. I want to do it while we have this television opportunity. You can’t pay for this kind of advertising. I’m always looking for the next building and next city. I’m trying to keep us relevant and give people something to watch.

MR:  That boy is crazy. Opening up all these restaurants is good, but you have to have employees. Soul food is a dying breed. A lot of people don't know how to fix it. A restaurant is not an easy thing. He thinks it is. I say don’t open that many. He wants to open a million.

Q: You say it’s hard to get employees for this chain.  Patti Labelle last year went of the charts with this pie. Have you thought about it.

MR: Don’t bring it up. I’ve had Tim and my person, I told them five or six years ago to get my sweet potato pie in the store. They lagging and went around doing some other BS (bullshit), excuse me. And Patti came and beat me with the sweet potato pie. I’m pissed. I’m happy for Patti, but that was my idea. And they procrastinated and didn’t get them in there.

TIM:  I’ve been meeting at Walmart, there are some things on the table. The lady who orchestrated the whole Patti deal, she said, Tim, I called Sweetie Pie’s for a good two months trying to get in contact with somebody, get in contact with me.  I never got the message. Before she did the Patti deal, she was trying to get in contact with us.
MR: If they had gone when I told them to go, she would have had contact because I sent the messenger.

Q: My condolences to your family on the death of your grandson. How did you all come together as a family to get through this tragedy?

MR: We’re not really through it. They haven’t found who did it. To lose Andre was devastating. He was my project. He was a troubled kid. Brought him to St. Louis to live with me thinking I might be able to take him over and help him get through life. He ended up dying in St Louis. That was really devastating.

TIM: It’s sad to say. The particular street where Andre was killed was across the park from my grandmother’s house. Her mother. It’s a block from where my dad got killed and another two blocks from there – another cousin was killed – all on the same street. It’s sad to say it happens time and time again. You never get used to it. In black communities it happens over and over and over again. Sad thing we have to go through that.

Q: Would you be open to opening another restaurant if it was a Sweetie Pie’s Music and Jazz Club where you could perform?

MR: I did my first concert in 25-30 years last month at Catalina. I was so scared. It was like I never sang. My voice wasn’t the best. Singing is my first love and chicken is my second.

'Almost Christmas' Is A Light Holiday Offering

By Darlene Donloe

If it’s November, it’s Almost Christmas, which is also the name of Universal’s feel good movie of the holiday season.

The film, out nationwide Friday, Nov. 11, is a comedy directed and written by David E. Talbert and produced by Will Packer (This Christmas).

The film, set in Birmingham, AL., is about a patriarch, played by Danny Glover, who asks his four grown children and sister-in-law to come home for one last time to spend five days together under one roof.  It’s the first time the family has spent the holiday under the family’s roof since the wife/mother passed away.  The father, who clearly knows his children, is hoping they will not kill each other, but will, instead, find some kind of way to live in harmony for five days.

Sounds easy enough, but that’s just not how this family rolls. Everybody has issues. Some have more than their share.

One by one family members traipse through the door to spend family time. First through the door is Aunt May, played by the hilarious Mo’Nique. She is the sister-in-law, who has delusions of being a good cook and who occasionally drinks too much. She is a background singer who has played with all of the popular musicians.  She is loud, flamboyant and a bit outrageous, but she’s also a lot of fun.

Gabrielle Union plays Rachel, one of the sisters who is having financial difficulties. She has a rivalry with her older sister, Cheryl, played by Kimberly Elise.  Their sibling rivalry stretches back to their childhood. Cheryl, who is married to Lonnie, has done well with her life and wonders why Rachel hasn’t done the same.  Lonnie, is played by JB Smoove. Lonnie has a lapse in judgment when he hits on a grocery store clerk.

Christian, played by Romany Malco, is the oldest son. He is currently running for office. His issue comes when he must decide whether to close something that was near and dear to his mother, or whether to further his political career.   Christian’s wife, played by Nicole Ari Parker and their two children are yearning to get more of his time.  Rachel is pursued by Malachi (Omar Epps), a next-door neighbor she dated in high school. Rachel is still holding a grudge for the miscommunication that resulted in them not attending the prom. The youngest son Evan (Jessie T. Usher) also has issues. Considered an accidental birth baby by his siblings, Evan has mother issues.

There are some funny moments in the film. There are also some hits and misses.  It feels very familiar. It’s somewhere between Packer’s 2007 hit, This Christmas and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins.

David E. Talbert has assembled a fine cast that delivers the dialogue and plays it up for laughs. Some of the laughs are over the top. Some are priceless. There are also some genuine emotional moments that help to round out the comedy/drama. That being said, the material feels too recognizable. There are no surprise, hidden gems to set it apart.

Almost Christmas isn’t a standout, however, in the end, it's all about love and family. You can never go wrong with that combination.

Almost Christmas, directed and written by David E. Talbert and produced by Will Packer, stars Kimberly Elise, Mo'Nique, Nicole Ari Parker, Gabrielle Union, Jessie Usher, Danny Glover, DC Young Fly, Omar Epps, and Romany Malco.

Almost Christmas is RATED: PG-13, Running time: 1h 52min

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likeable), O (oh, yeah) and E (excellent), Almost Christmas gets an L (likeable).

Cece Winans Wants To 'Let Them Fall In Love'

Ten-time Grammy winner Cece Winans' long-awaited new album, Let Them Fall In Love, is set for release on February 3, 2017 via Puresprings Gospel/Thirty Tigers. Recording her first solo album in nearly a decade, the multiplatinum-selling artist returned to the studio in both New York and Nashville to cut her most adventurous album yet. Produced by her son Alvin Love III, along with Winans' long-time collaborator Tommy Sims (Garth Brooks, Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt), and mixed by Dae Bennett (Tony Bennett, Amy Winehouse, Olivia Newton-John) and Jimmy Douglass (Pharrell Williams, Michael Buble), 'Let Them Fall In Love' finds Winans at the peak of her artistry.

The ten tracks are polished with emotion and confidence and come alive with Winans' iconic voice. Musically, big band horns and strings from the Nashville String Machine come together in a glorious blend of past and present, with arrangements that simultaneously recall the heyday of Motown while still sounding undeniably modern.

Winans inhabits each song on the record so fully in part because she's lived their stories. On "Hey Devil!," she's joined by fellow vocal powerhouses The Clark Sisters for a playful rebuke of temptation, while "Lowly" is a lesson about pride and humility aimed at the young men and women who might need it most. Winans' eclectic ability shines through on the pedal steel country waltz of "Why Me," a song she discovered when she was invited to perform it live with its writer, Kris Kristofferson. On the album's other cover, "Dancing in The Spirit" (written by Lady Peachena), Winans is joined by Hezekiah Walker and his choir for a jubilant celebration.

It's the album's closer and title track, though, that seems to light Winans up more than any other. "The first song I heard was "Let Them Fall In Love," and I told my son that it had to be the heartbeat of the record," says Winans. "There's a lot of different styles and a lot of strong messages on there, but all of them are to bring us to the point of falling in love with love, faith, joy, and peace. This is why I came back after nine years." The single is also resonating with gospel radio with a rapid gain in adds and chart positioning.
Winans will tour major markets in 2017, and those dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

'Let Them Fall In Love' track list:
1. He's Never Failed Me Yet
2. Run To Him
3. Hey Devil!
4. Peace From God
5. Why Me
6. Lowly
7. Never Have To Be Alone
8. Dancing In The Spirit
9. Marvelous
10. Let Them Fall In Love

About Cece Winans:
Winans has released a slew of duo and solo albums that crossed genres and boundaries and influenced a generation of gospel and secular vocalists. Her mantel today holds a staggering ten GRAMMY Awards, 20 Dove Awards, and seven Stellar Awards. She's been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Nashville Music City Walk of Fame, in addition to being named a Trailblazer of Soul by BMI and garnering multiple NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards, Essence Awards, and more. She's sold in excess of five million albums in the U.S. alone, topping the Gospel charts repeatedly while managing to cross over with smashes like "Count On Me," her stunning duet with Whitney Houston from the multi-platinum 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack, which sold two million copies and cracked the Top 10 on the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary charts. She touched millions more with inspirational performances everywhere from Oprah to The White House, and even showed off her acting chops on television series like '7th Heaven' and 'Doc.' In 2016, Winans became a member of the Artist Committee for the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

'ARRIVAL' Sets New Standard For Sci-Fi Films

By Darlene Donloe

Are we alone in the universe? The question of whether earth is the only planet inhabited by intelligent beings has long been a mystery.

If you believe in Area 51, then you align with conspiracy theorists who believe that the remains of crashed UFO space crafts are stored at the Air Force base about 150 miles from Las Vegas,

On November 11, the notion of the existence of extraterrestrials becomes a reality in the sci-fi flick, ARRIVAL in theaters November 11.

They are here!  But the question is why?

This suspenseful drama is slow and deliberate in its presentation. It’s smart and a bit heady for the average moviegoer, but it offers some insight into our very existence. Intellectuals will “get” the film straight away. Others may scratch their heads at what they have just seen. While the main focus of this film is about our attempt to contact alien intelligence, there is something even deeper at work here. Folded inside the plot is the ultimate love story. Not much more can be said without giving away the movie’s ending.

Director Denis Villeneuve has created a lovely, beautifully shot mysterious fantasy that exposes humanity and our ability to see and believe in something beyond ourselves.  For the first time mankind is forced to consider the possibility of having to share the planet.

This daring, masterfully shot film is propelled by great performances from a solid cast that includes Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker.

As the story goes - when 12 mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team - lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) - is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.

After the alien vessels touch down the scientists and experts go aboard in hopes of finding out why they have come to earth.

Once the scientist venture inside the vessel the aliens appear on the other side of glass. They only communicate with the experts for short spurts of time.   Banks communicates as best she can -  presenting information about earth and its inhabitants.  She also asks questions of the space invaders in hopes of figuring out the majestic creatures’ intentions.  Ultimately, the scientists have to resort to elementary means of communication.

There have been plenty of sci-fi films featuring visitors from outer space, but Arrival looks and feels monumentally dissimilar. There is a texture to Arrival that sets it apart from the others. Most notably the aliens themselves don’t have the usual beady eyes.  They have a strange look, but it’s almost calming.

Technically and imaginatively, ARRIVAL is a winner!

ARRIVAL, directed by Denis Villeneuve, stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Ruth Chiang, Tzi Ma and Michael Stuhlbarg.

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likeable), O (oh, yeah) and E (excellent), ARRIVAL gets an O (oh, yeah).

ARRIVAL is RATED PG-13 (for brief strong language); Runtime: 116 minutes.
