Dear Evan Hansen, Appreciate You, Sincerely........

By Darlene Donloe

Dear Evan Hansen, I had a great time watching you last weekend at the opening in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre.

There are many reasons to like the show. The writing is exceptional, the story is heartbreaking, the acting is heartwarming, the music is fulfilling, the set design is stunning and the direction brings it all together.

This is the first national tour of the six-time, Tony Award-winning musical, directed by four-time Tony® Award nominee Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal).  Having just opened in Los Angeles, according to reps at the Ahmanson, advance sales for this first national tour are higher for Dear Evan Hansen than for any show in the theater's history. Here in Los Angeles, the show is expected to gross well over $4 million.

The infectious musical opens with a single bed located downstage center. The projection panels behind the bed are illuminated with images of social media.

The story begins to unfold. Evan Hansen is a nerdy 17-year-old high school kid who doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. He wonders if anyone actually “sees” him.  As one of the songs in the show conveys, he just wants to be found.

Evan is being raised by a single mom who is seldom home. Her time away from her son, doesn’t diminish her love for him.

In therapy, the anxiety-ridden Evan is told to write letters from himself to uplift himself and reassure him that everything is going to be alright.  He begins each letter with the words – Dear Evan Hansen.

As luck would have it, one day he prints out a letter he has written to himself. In the letter, he refers to a girl at his school for which he secretly lusts. Before he can retrieve it, a troubled teen, who is also a school bully named Connor Murphy who also happens to be the girl’s brother, finds the letter in the printer and immediately thinks Evan left it there to torment him.

When Connor kills himself, his parents find the letter and immediately assume it’s a letter their son wrote to Evan Hansen. What happens after that is a snowball effect of confusion. It shows clearly how quickly information is passed when using the internet and how it’s almost impossible to reign in the information once it’s been let out into the ether.

It’s an emotional story that finds Evan trying to comfort Connor’s family by allowing them to believe some untruths about their son. Their need to believe he was something he wasn’t, coupled with Evan’s need to be noticed – creates poignant chaos. It’s all at once frightening and fascinating to watch how easily a story can catch fire. It's also startling and captivating to watch a family grasp at straws as they desperately try piecing together the complicated puzzle that was their troubled son.

Connor’s parents and Evan’s mother, Heidi (Jessica Phillips), play pivotal roles. Of course, they agonize over the well-being of their children. They wonder about where their personal responsibility begins and ends when it comes to their children’s happiness. It’s a minefield. Heidi is empathetic to her son's issues and emotions. She wants to do better but she's distracted because she's fighting her own internal war.

I must admit, for a minute I thought the show was ending right after the first act’s song finale. It seemed appropriate. I wondered where the story was going in act two, and whether it would be warranted.

Ok, Evan, you got me. It was good.  It was worth the 40 minutes, especially since it holds two impactful songs from the show.

When things seem to be coming to a head and Evan’s secret is revealed, he sings Words Fail and his mother, Heidi sings a teary-eyed So Big/So Small, both of which received extended applause at Friday’s opening night performance.

Michael Greif has directed a solid, engaging, hilarious and uplifting piece of theater. Even pacing keeps the story moving forward.

Ben Levi Ross, who plays Evan Hansen, is brilliant. A one-time understudy for the show in New York, Ross takes over the role from Ben Platt.

Seldom leaving the stage, Ross seamlessly weaves himself in and out of scenes and in and out of some powerful songs.  Ross, who is barely a buck 0-5, envelops the stage. His personality and vocals fill the theater.  The supporting cast is exceptional. Each brings their own brand of magic to the production.

Jared Goldsmith plays Evan’s ‘kind of friend.’ Well to be more accurate, he wants Evan to know that he is just a “family friend.” Goldsmith brings comic relief to the proceedings.

Phoebe Koyabe, who plays Alana Beck, a classmate who is a social media whiz and who can easily find ways to make money off of Connor’s death, shines on stage. This is Koyabe’s debut and she hits it out of the park.

The set design, which is like a character until itself, is about as visual as a set can get. While the actual stage is sparse, the projections on the backdrops are in constant movement with email conversations and social media images. And then there is the music. There are some great songs in this show, including the popular Waving Through A Window, sung by Evan in the first act. There's a lot more where that came from. Standouts include You Will Be Found, To Break In A Glove and Sincerely, Me.

Dear Evan Hansen opened at the Music Box Theatre to rave reviews on December 4, 2016, where it’s broken all box office records and become a favorite for critics and audiences alike.
Dear Evan Hanson, directed by Michael Greif, stars Ben Levi Ross in the title role, Jessica Phillips, Tony Award nominee Christiane Noll, Aaron Lazar,  Marrick Smith, Maggie McKenna, Jared Goldsmith, and Phoebe Koyabe.

Dear Evan Hansen, book by Steven Levenson music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, choreographed by Danny M., projection designer by Peter Nigrini, orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, music director by Austin Cook, vocal arrangements by Justin Paul, choreography by Danny Mefford and Stacey Mindich (producer).

On the DONLOE SCALE: D (don’t bother), O (oh, no), N (needs work), L (likable), O (oh, yeah) and E (excellent) Dear Evan Hansen gets an E (excellent).

CeCe Winans Makes Sure 'Something's Happening!'

The calendar shows autumn is in full swing, but Christmas is in the air and award-winning singer CeCe Winans is gearing up for her fourth-holiday recording, Something’s Happening! A Christmas Album (Puresprings Gospel/ Thirty Tigers).

The 11 track musical delight features Christmas classics and new songs perfect for holiday gatherings and trimming the tree. The contemporary collection of compositions is available at iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, Barnes & Noble, and other music retail outlets.  All retail link: https://ffm.to/somethingshappening

Once again, Winans teams up with her son Alvin Love III, a Grammy-winning producer, to deliver a smorgasbord of festive songs that will have listeners coming back for more each year.  Something’s Happening! A Christmas Album will no doubt be added to consumer’s holiday stash of favorites.  Love penned five new songs for this spirit-filled Christmas album, incorporating five classic tunes with a distinctive musical twist.  He went the extra mile and invited the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tim Akers and recorded at Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb, Croatia.

“We were inspired by the Christmas albums from the golden era of symphonic popular music. This album is grand in scale and spectrum. Each song is accompanied by a 75 piece orchestra and brings out a different color in CeCe’s voice, some colors will be familiar some will be new. It’s a big sound and we’re really proud of it,” says Love.

CeCe Winans

The melodious sound of This World Will Never Be the Same reminds listeners how much the world has changed, but gives us hope for a better tomorrow.  The whimsical, Giving Season paints a vivid picture of Christmastime and the spirit of giving while the classic, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing delivers familiarity in the beginning, but midway through the song the tempo changes to flavorful and rhythmic percussions.   In a festive contemporary seasonal carol, It’s Christmas, Alvin Love’s crafted tune will have you swaying and singing along.

Earlier this week Billboard Magazine premiered the single, It’s Christmas noting its’ upbeat, Motown-flavor that apparently had some musical influence on the Detroit born singer.  This is Winans’ first solo Christmas album since the release of His Gift in 1998.

Investigator Drops Bomb About Tupac and Biggie

Newly Retired F.B.I. lead investigator for Wallace and Shakur Cases tears down recent theories about gang wars and gang shooters, and bolsters claims made in 2017 doc- and allegedly has the docs to prove it.

Los Angeles, CA.The controversial and well-received documentary "Tupac Assassination: Battle for Compton" celebrates a one-year anniversary release - and its producers celebrated by dropping a new piece of corroborating testimony on claims made in the movie.

The corroboration comes from Phil Carson, the former Lead Investigator for the Shakur and Wallace cases for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Carson retired last year and appears to have taken all of his notes and case files with him- notes and files that back claims made in the "Assassination" movies. Agent Phil Carson built the FBI's case and was ready to file charges on it with the United States Attorney.

Carson is said to have volumes pages of FBI investigative files that document the trail of corruption that implicates the FBI, L.A. Police Chiefs Bratton, Parks, the LA Times, and the United States Attorney of Los Angeles. The files reveal what former L.A.P.D. Detective Russell Poole had already surmised, and later included in both the book “Tupac:187” and the movie “Tupac Assassination: Battle for Compton”- a concentrated concealment to hide the implication that LAPD officers, David Mack, Rafael Perez, and Sammy Martin, murdered Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace by hiring a contract assassin, Amir Muhammad.

"Compton" asserts that this assassination was to cover up for a botched coup at Death Row Records, which saw an earlier attempt to take out Marion "Suge Knight" and by association Tupac Shakur. Of course, Knight lived and is now serving 28 years for an unrelated offense. But Shakur died 6 days later and it is alleged that the Wallace hit was to further a cover-up for the Knight shooting.

According to Carson, the alleged further cover-up included L.A.P.D. Deputy Chiefs, Bratton, Parks, and others, working in concert with LA Times journalist, Chuck Phillips as their official mouthpiece. Phillips is alleged to have been granted unprecedented access to the L.A.P.D. for purposes of passing along a narrative that diverted attention from the real suspects.

Carson, in a recent interview, made public last week, stated:

“You know what gets under my skin more than anything, is that the LAPD all the way to the very, very f--ing top, knew exactly what was going...I can prove to you that they not only knew but how they obstructed this case and how they tried to completely derail it.”

For its part “Battle for Compton” producer/director RJ Bond stated, “We knew for some time that Phil Carson was ready to make a case. In fact, we talk about it in the movie. But the FBI needs the assistance of local police like the L.A.P.D. in doing its legwork. That is what a ‘task force’ is; local police being ‘deputized’ to help the FBI like in the old west when people were deputized by the sheriff.

“Look at all the defiance the State of California now shows to ICE and how it effectively stymies the job ICE does in California. Politicians tipping off suspects, etc. Carson’s handlers at the FBI knew that without the L.A.P.D. their investigations in the LA area would be ‘over’ to use Carson’s words.

“People have asked for years how the L.A.P.D. was able to pull it off, and that’s how- a simple exercise in leverage- you have what we want, drop the investigation. And Carson did that because at the time it was about his job.

“Now, Carson’s retired and we can hardly wait to hear about his work at the FBI, we know it’s’ congruent with ‘Battle for Compton’ in many ways. One day, we hope that all of our work will be validated, but we take what we can get, and this is a big one!”

To see the entire story mapped out, watch “Tupac Assassination: Battle for Compton” on I-Tunes and Amazon Prime.” It is also available on DVD and Blu-Ray from Music Video Entertainment, on Amazon and other retail outlets.
