California – Hawaii State Conference: Moving Forward in Times of Uncertainty

Attorney General Xavier Becerra to speak at annual conference

 

The California – Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP, schedules a day of Political Advocacy during the 30th Annual California – Hawaii State Conference entitled, “Moving Forward in Times of Uncertainty. Focusing on political advocacy on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at the LAX Marriott Hotel. The state conference plans to engage provoking dialogue regarding current issues affecting both California and our nation plus honor the legacy of former California House Speaker Willie L. Brown, Jr. 

Getting the day started early, the conference opens with a Political Breakfast entitled “Smart Policing Policy”. Speakers for this event include Joseph Farrow, Chief of Police (University of California Davis), Matthew Johnson (Commissioner, Los Angeles Police Department), Honorable. Chris Holden (California Legislative Black Caucus) with closing remarks given by Xavier Becerra, California Attorney General, who is the first Latino to hold the position in the State of California.

Immediately after breakfast, delegates move into engaging workshops before the Annual Political Labor Luncheon. This year’s theme entitled, “Are the Regulators Including Us?” will focus on regulators hearing our community voices throughout their law-making policies, specifically the concerns of Cannabis regulations throughout the state of California.  Former Mayor of Oakland California, Elihu Harris will preside over the luncheon as speakers Hon. Reginald Jones-Sawyer (Member, California State Legislature), Lori Ajax (Chief Cannabis Relations Bureau), Donnie Anderson (Founder, California Minority Alliance, and CA – HI State Conference Cannabis Task Force Chair), Cat Packer (Executive Director, Los Angeles Department of Cannabis Regulation) address the issues. Closing remarks will be given by Hon. Darren Parker, who is the current Chair, African American Caucus, CDP.

Wrapping up the day is an entertaining Awards Dinner entitled, “How to Hold On to Our Gains” honoring the political career and legacy of Former California Speaker of the House Willie L. Brown Jr. Tributes from Robert Pullen Miles (Mayor, Lawndale, CA), Tasha Cerda (Mayor, Gardena, CA), Hon. Kevin De Leon (California Senate Pro Tem) are expected with an unforgettable performance by songstress Freda Payne. Los Angeles City Councilman President Herb Wesson will give closing remarks.

This full day of political advocacy will leave delegates in a sharpened position to practice smart policing, have a greater understanding of cannabis regulatory policy and be able to maintain and continue “Moving Forward in Time of Uncertainty”.

As always, the California - Hawaii State Conference of the NAACP will continue to fight to ensure that the needs of justice, education, and equality are being upheld.
