It’s Black Music Month! I asked a number of celebrities the
following question and received some very interesting answers. Most of the answers paid homage to Old Skool singers.
If you could have the voice of any singer
throughout history, whose would it be?
KERRY WASHINGTON (Scandal)
- Nina Simone, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. “I can’t
pick just one.”
CRAIG ROBINSON (The Office) – Stevie Wonder
CRAIG ROBINSON (The Office) – Stevie Wonder
DIAHANN CARROLL
DIAHANN CARROLL (Julia/Claudine/Peeples) – Kathleen Battle, she does the classics beautifully.
GLYNN TURMAN (House of Lies/Joe Turners
Come and Gone) - Joe Williams
BRIAN CULBERTSON – Nat King
Cole. OMG!, that voice. It’s a velvety voice. It’s unbelievable. You can see him
smiling while he’s singing.
KATT WILLIAMS (comedian) - Al Green. He was in control of making sure his notes and
lyrics always felt like they were coming from him and not a conglomerate of
other people. You can feel his music.
DAVID ALAN GRIER (Peeples)
– Otis Redding
S. EPATHA MERKERSON (Law
& Order) Chaka Khan
ELLA JOYCE (Roc) – Randy Crawford
ROBBIE JONES (Temptation) – Sam Cooke and
Stevie Wonder
TYLER JAMES WILLIAMS (Everybody Hates
Chris) – Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake
KALI HAWK (Temptation) – Beyonce
MALCOLM BARRETT (Peeples) – S. Epatha
Merkerson. People don’t know it, but she has a great voice.
KEVIN EUBANKS – (musician) Nat King Cole
JERMAINE DUPRI (producer) – Michael
Jackson. From age five to 50, his voice was great.
GREGORY PORTER (R&B singer) – Donnie
Hathaway. It was jazz, soul and gospel. Yeah, I’ll take that one.
KEITH DAVID – (The Bible) Nat King
Cole. His music speaks to my soul.
My favorite song is Make Believe You’re
Here.
LANCE GROSS (Temptation) – Donnie
Hathaway
