Nine for IX Shorts Added to Festival Lineup
LOS ANGELES (May 20, 2014) – Today the Los Angeles Film Festival, presented by Film Independent, in conjunction with Presenting
Media Sponsor Los Angeles Times and Host Partner L.A. LIVE, announced that the world premiere of Relativity’s
Earth to Echo will take place at the Festival on June 14.
Also taking place on June 14 as part of a special day of family
programming is the Future Filmmakers Luncheon with keynote speaker
Emilio Kauderer and
Gravity Falls Live! Additional Festival programming announced includes ESPN Films’
Nine for IX Shorts Series: Short Takes on the Power of Women Athletes and
Dolby’s The Sound of Your Story: A Case Study of Comet.

Tuck, Munch and Alex are
a closely bonded trio of inseparable friends, but their time together
is coming to an end. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a
highway construction project
that is forcing their families to move away. But just two days before
they must part ways, the boys find a cryptic signal has infected their
phones. Convinced something bigger is going on and looking for one final
adventure together, they set off to trace
the messages to their source and discover something beyond their
wildest imaginations: hiding in the darkness is a mysterious being,
stranded on Earth and wanted by the government. This launches the boys
on an epic journey full of danger and wonder, one that
will test the limits of their friendship and change all of their lives
forever.
Earth to Echo is the feature film directorial debut for director Dave Green. The film will be released in theaters nationwide on July 2.
The Future Filmmakers Luncheon, sponsored by
Loyola Marymount University's School
of Film and Television and Relativity Education, will take place on June
14 and features composer Emilio Kauderer (The Secret in Their Eyes, Miss Bala,
A Place in the World)
as the keynote speaker. The Luncheon is an annual event honoring the
talented high school students who have
films in the Future Filmmaker Showcase at the Festival. The Luncheon is
a celebration of the art of storytelling from the youngest voices of
the creative community. Acclaimed composer Kauderer will pass on words
of wisdom to empower and inspire the young filmmakers
as they pursue a career in the industry. The event is open to the
public. Purchasing a ticket to the luncheon includes access to one of
the Future Filmmaker Screenings, previously announced on May 6. The
Future Filmmakers Showcase also takes place on June 14 is a
selection of shorts made by high school age students from all over the
country. The 2014 edition also includes shorts from Canada, Laos,
The Netherlands and Taiwan.
Also part of the Festival’s family-friendly fare
on Saturday, June 14 is Gravity Falls Live! Actors Jason Ritter (Parenthood), Kristen Schaal (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart)
and creator/executive producer Alex Hirsch will perform a live reading
of a scene from an upcoming
episode of the hit Disney Television Animation series, reveal a sneak
peek of Season Two and participate in a Q&A moderated by Doug Jones,
Associate Director of Programming for the Festival.
Gravity Falls follows the adventures of twins Dipper (Ritter) and Mabel Pines (Schaal), who spend the summer with their great uncle, Grunkle
Stan (Hirsch). They think it's just another usual summer until mysterious events start to take place. Season Two of Gravity Falls premieres this summer on Disney Channel.
On June 15, the Festival and the Dolby Institute are holding Dolby’s The Sound of Your Story: A Case Study of
Comet, with director Sam Esmail and his sound team. They will
discuss the process of designing and creating the soundtrack for the
film.
Comet is having its world premiere at the Festival. On June 17, the Festival will screen
ESPN Films’ Nine for IX series: Short Takes on the Power of Women Athletes,
ESPN's latest series of shorts that shine the spotlight on the
challenges and triumphs of women athletes followed by a discussion with
the filmmakers.
The full series will premiere on ESPN's platforms in late July and
features Brittney Griner: Life Size
by Melissa Johnson, Unchartered Waters by Tina Cerbone,
Think Normal by Nikki Reed, Play A Round With Me by Jessica Wolfson and
Rowdy Ronda Rousey by The Mundo Sisters.
Previously announced,
filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko will serve as this year’s Guest Director for
the Festival and Sony Pictures Classics’ Tom Bernard and Michael Barker
will receive the Spirit
of Independence Award. Also announced earlier, free Community
Screenings including a Dance-A-Long screening of Luis Valdez’s
La Bamba, Dave LaMattina and Chad Walker’s I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story, Buster Keaton’s
Cops and Sherlock Jr., and Thomas Miller’s
Limited Partnership.
More Special Screenings and Programs will be announced in the coming weeks.
Passes are currently on
sale to Film Independent members and the general public. In addition to
screenings and events, Festival passes provide access to a series of
networking receptions
and entry to the Festival Lounge, where Festival pass holders can
interact with Festival filmmakers and professionals in the film

made available throughout downtown Los Angeles during the nine-day
event.
